A small Japanese restaurant near Lougheed Station
Having eaten at literally hundreds of sushi places throughout the lower mainland the food from kokyo keeps bringing me back, even though i now live closter to several other places. The food here is exceptional compared to all others i have had. the in house specialties are beautiful and very tasty. I highly recomend this place to everyone whenever the question of food comes up, lunch, snack, dinner, whatever mmmmmkokyo.
We've ordered take-out from here many times, and have eatin in one of the little booth/rooms once as well. The service is always friendly and the cooks are always smiling and nodding and saying hello/goodbye when we arrive/leave.
We normally get the chicken bento boxes or the beef ones. If not, then it's a usual assortment of sushi rolls like California, Spider, Tempura, etc.
No complaints, I'm always thoroughly satisfied with the bento boxes. We like the little booths/rooms as well.
We eat here about once per week as the food is consistently good and the value exceptional. The baked rolls are incredible - salmon, seafood, or scallop are all yummy. The Hungry Man is also good. My other half has had a variety of sashimi and enjoyed it. We haven't really tried the entrees so can't say much about them but have heard from others that they are also good. A sushi dinner for two consisting of 2 miso, 2 gomaie, 3 rolls, and tea comes to about $20. How can you beat that? The food usually arrives promptly and the decor is casual Japanese with a few tatami rooms. The restaurant, including bathroom, is clean.
After eating at Yan's Garden I passed by the next door Japanese restaurant of Kokyo which grabbed my attention by the pictures of their delicious looking sushi that they hung on their walls. Well...pictures can be deceiving. I always make sure to visit all the restaurants I rate twice so I can get a good opinion on them so I'm sure that Kokyo is nothing short of average. For the amount of people that was dining at the restaurant (only 4, including my party) the food took much too long to prepare for what it was. It doesn't help that the prices are a bit more than they should be for small portioned mediocre tasting sushi. A redeeming part of this restaurant (if there is one) however will be that they serve a set of "baked" sushis which can be a rather new (but not really rewarding) experience. The servers like ignoring me and the ambiance is whats to be expected for a Japanese restaurant, so nothing much more to say on that.
I wouldn't really recommend you come here, if you do order the Palm Spring Roll and/or House Roll. Its the only thing on the menu I found to be worth my time.
