I wouldn't call this a restaurant, it's more of a sushi bar. They only offer udon as the only hot item on their menu. I had sushi from here yesterday.
I'm a little confused at how I feel about this place. Yes, they're japanese, but they don't offer traditional politely-bite sized pieces. Their sushi roll pieces are too big - definitely can't eat in one bite. Kinda reminds me of Samurai sushi where you have to eat the sushi in sections. Two of the rolls I bought both had imitation crab in it, and they both tasted the same.
Their sushi is not made to order. They have a display refridgerator where all the sushi is boxed up. Although it tasted okay, I can't be sure when exactly they were made.
If I were to return (not very likely) I would probably just go for their sushi bowls.
Since I work in the area, I've eaten in many times and called in some orders as well. The rolls are quite sloppy-looking and the flavour is definitely not very "fresh". The only reason I kept coming back was due to a lack of options in the area - which is no longer a problem (thank you Sushi Garden!)
I gave their service a 1 out of 5 because the one time I complained about them missing a Kappa roll in my order (not once, but 2 times) all the manager did was give me a blank stare and say, "I don't remember," and, "you should have checked your order" - excuse me, but you try unpackaging your order in a packed restaurant, with no counter space, and many hungry customers behind you (!) I was fairly disappointed because by this point I had been going there often, and they knew me. Plus - it's just cucumber and rice.
To be fair, everyone else seems pretty nice :) but, because their food is so shabby-looking and the flavour lacks freshness, I won't be going back.
I decided to try this place after noticing it going to Taco Del Mar beside it numerous times. Decided to give it a shot but wasn't worth it. I ordered the California Rolls which were extremely large in size and had nothing stand out flavour wise. The Salmon Rolls were bite size but the salmon didn't taste fresh at all. I was honestly worried if i'd start upchucking my lunch. Then the Dynamite Rolls......well these are generally supposed to be larger sized but these were pre made and just handed to me from the cooler. Bad idea. Overall it was really disappointing especially given that the tempura battered prawn in the roll was not crunchy but soggy. The rolls weren't rolled tight either.......everything fell apart and their size didn't help the fact either.
Glad I tried it, so now I won't wonder what it's like and no need to go back.
I definitely will not return to Kita. I was there when they first opened and the sushi rice was rock hard and tasteless. Miso soup was nothing to call home about. Overall the sushi was sub par and not worth eating. The owners are not Japanese despite what a prior reviewer has said. (You may however hear her speaking Japanese)
The owners are Korean. They do speak Japanese though. Must have lived in Japan. Not the greatest Japanese restaurant I've been to, but not the worst, either. I always order sunomono salad at every Japanese restaurant I go to to check the vinegar and sugar balance. Too sour here, definitely not Japanese.
Service, just ok. Pay first policy. Sushi, just ok.
Better restaurants in the Metrotown part of Burnaby for sushi.
For less than $10, the Hoi Dub Bob comes with a bowl full of rice, lettuce, a pound of raw fish, and excellent spicy sauce. There is no way you can finish it in one sitting. Incredible value.
The Ebi Sunomono is also good, but nothing beats the value of the Hoi Dub Bob bowl.
The sushi rolls are pre-made. They use to have really huge california rolls but now are regular sizes which is taste way better. The only thing that I really don't like about this place is that they re-use their gloves! Go watch them when they make your sushi and you'll see what I'm talking about :S Other than that, the people are very friendly and the sushi rolls are alright.
I was wonderously disappointed that this Sushi place was only a little To Go place with no kitchen at all. They explained that they could not haveone because of residential people living right above them. I yet did not want to simply leave as I did not have much time for my lunch. I took a look at the menu, I just ordered Salmon Sashimi and a couple of rolls which I usually have at Japanese restaurant. Even if they were what I usually eat at Japanese restaurant, the Sashimi was really fresh, Dynamite Roll tasted delightefully unique compared to others' although they used premade deep fried prawns. I'm positive that it'd be even way tastier if they had a deep fryer whereas it's just too bad that they can't have a kitchen. They also make their own style of Spicy Sauce for their Spicy Tuna Rolls which was very good. I still remember the taste of it even now. The staffs were working busily, yet they did not forget to give bright smiles. I'm getting more and mopre attracted to this place to spend my lunch time pleasantly enjoying and worth it if it were ever to spend lunch time efficiently and worthy.
Went to Kita Sushi Restaurant no. 2 also on Dawson. Ihad my reservations since I ordered a role previously on the original Kita and it was tiny and expensive. We got takoyaki balls which tasted ok but they were deep fried as opposed to cooking it it in the traditional takoyaki ball waffle maker type gadget. Then, ordered BC roll. I asked if they used salmon skin they said yes. They charged $4.20 for 6 small pcs. and in the end they put a tiny dot of salmon barely visible and the rest is California roll. they have the audacity to call it bc roll. sushi garden does this too but they only charge $2.95. Here they charge you $4.20 andyou are eating fake California with a dot of salmon. I could not eat it bec. the fake crab contains milk ingredients or egg. one of the two which Im allergic in. REPEAT. DO NOT EAT HERE. Everything in their menu is inflated.
The people working at kita are really friendly and courteous. The sushi itself is pretty good, it's some of the best I've had. A lot of people really discredit this place because of it's hole in the wall nature, and the fact that they have some of the sushi pre-made... but I think they're just sushi-snobs. It's excellent quality, priced very nice, and the portions are awesome. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for sushi.
