Great steaks, a casual ambiance and friendly, very knowledgeable staff are the proud and reliable trademarks of The Keg Steakhouse & Bar.
My wife and I visited the Keg for a romantic night out and I must say I was very impressed. The service and ambiance in this rustic restaurant was top notch, something I have come to miss here in Vancouver since moving from the states. The steaks were suculent and most enjoyable. Our server was the utmost courteous and attentive, catering to our every need. The fish entree my wife picked could have been prepared a little better, but nonetheless, it was OK. We decided to enjoy MY steak together. Blown away and will be back!
I've had good steaks and I've had great steaks from the Keg. I would say that this location makes very good steaks compared to others. The atmosphere inside is also very nice. It gives you a very warm feeling. I would definitely like to come back more often. Try to come early (like 5 or 5:30) for dinner. It fills up very quickly. I had the prime rib and it was heavenly. I also tried their ribeye another time and it was to die for. Also the deserts are worth a try too.
The reasoning for the Keg at Still Creek to not accept reservations is that it's too popular, too busy. All other Kegs will take reservations, but not Still Creek.
They spent big $ to build a new restaurant, but then go half-ass on the service/system for customers.
Put in a policy, if you're 10 minutes late for your reservation, you lose your spot, because we are so busy. Leave 40% of your restaurant as first come-first serve and then you can accommodate both walk-ins and reservations.
Booths and such are fine, but if you can't move tables around to meet demand, what good is a new restaurant.
We've been there 3 times, service was great, but the staff can only do so much when the infrastructure isn't flexible.
Steaks were OK, but as noted in other reviews, lots of fatty pieces, which takes up 10-20% of the steak.
I came to this restaurant weeks ago but still remember roughly how good their steak was. The meat was perfectly cooked with just the right amount of moistness, sauce, and tenderness. I told the waitress that I would share the steak with my mom. When the meal arrived, the meat was served halved on both plates with some mashed potatoes. It is not cheap, but I guess it's just a solid value because even after the steak was cut into two parts, it was still huge and fulfilling that I thought I had a full portion. The mashed potatoes was just okay. Cactus Club has better mashed potatoes. But it's just a side meal anyway so I won't bother it too much.
Was there w/ friends on Saturday at 5:30 pm. Could not believe how crowded it was at that time. Could not tell me that there is a recession! During our wait, one of the Keggers came with a tray of appies...nice of Keg for those who are waiting a long time. After 45 min., we were led to our table but the hostess found out that the table was occupied, so we had to wait another couple of minutes.
At our table, we were greeted by our server almost right away who was very friendly. The 4 occupying the table next to us however could have been a whole lot quieter, 2 of the guys were well into their cups!
Anyways, one of my friends and I ordered the Sirloin Classic and the other Prime Rib Classic. All 3 entrees came out exactly as we ordered, even though the baked potato was on the dry side. It was one of my pals birthday and the birthday person gets a free dessert for their birthday.
I have eaten at the Keg a number of times and was aware that they don't use the best meat but their spices somewhat compensated and so I ate their occasionally.
Tonight I was served a New York striploin which was clearly soaked in something designed to soften the meat, as I felt I was eating sawdust. The Keg says they marinate their steaks, I say they soak them in lemonjuice(softens tough meat), because if they marinated them, the steaks would have much more flavour.
I sent my steak back and ordered a Sirloin, which arrived in much the same condition that my New York came, rubbery, sawdust texture with very little flavour. Anyone who thinks this is a good steak obviously hasn't had a good steak and I pity them.
Charging $25-35 for this kind of meal should be illegal, I will not step foot in the Keg again.
I usually hate going for steak with my fiance b/c I don't eat red meat. The last few times we went to the Keg, I ordered chicken and it was really dry and awful. When I visited this Keg location, though, I ordered the daily fish special and it was fantastic! Almost as good as the fist at a seafood speciality restaurant! I was quite impressed.
We really enjoyed our server. He was energetic, talkative, friendly and took the extra step to make our dining experience fantastic. The manager of the restaurant also came by to check on us and get some feedback. Together, the staff really took care of details. It was very busy (Christmas season), and still, they managed to make the extra effort for us. We had a wonderful time!
This would be pretty much a typical Keg.
They wouldn't take reservations for a party of 10 and then made us wait 45 minutes..Meanwhile upon looking in the restaurant they could easily have seated us. Of course they would love you to spend a fortune in the bar while waiting.Unfortunately the ploy didn't work as this was largely a non boozing group.
The menu at the Keg is of very Generic and way overpriced.
Lots of meat items at 22 bucks and up.Not much else.
Quality of the food served was acceptable and service was fine.
If you want fine dining go somewhere else. For the kind of money they charge, you could eat like a King/Queen elsewhere.
If your idea of a good time is lousy bread, a slab of beef and a baked potato with really expensive booze you'll be happy here.
This keg location is my all time favourite. Everyone is friendly and attentive. The food is excellent, and if there is anything you are not pleased about with your meal they will fix it promptly for you. The manager even brings it out himself or comes out right away to apologize.
The restaurant can become very busy and packed so make sure to arrive early if you don't want to wait
I come visit this Keg about once every other month or so and each time I come I always have a great time!
My steak is always done the way I want it! (i'm not picky, but even gotham's made my medium-rare steak wrong) Service is usually prompt even tho they are busy! Expect to wait for a table if you show up after 7pm! Our servers were always really thorough with the specials or any questions we may have.
The prices for the steaks is exceptional value compared to other high-end steakhouses. It's not your regular pub steak price, but its about $15-$20 cheaper than all the high-end over-hyped places.
And the taste? wonderful! I've tried many steakhouses in vancouver, and I must admit there are some good places out there, but I can't ever forget the taste of the Keg's Baseball sirloin!! I don't know what it is, must be the rub on the outside and the perfection on the inside! It's always juicy and cooked to perfection!! (that is if you like medium-rare or rarer steaks, cuz its a thick cut!)
Overall, the keg is a nice place to even make it a special occasion without breaking the bank! Which means we can have more special occasions now! :D
