Japolo Sushi is a Japanese restaurant that also features some Vietnamese dishes such as Pho on their menu. Japolo offers student discounts and free delivery after 5pm.
I'm surprised this restaurant hasn't been reviewed since it's been in operations for almost a decade. It's close to my bf's work and we finally ventured in on the recommendations of my friend who is a lunch regular for with his coworkers.
One of the unique things about this restaurant was that it also featured a Vietnamese menu, so we ordered sushi, sashimi selections with a Vietnamese rice dish. All were fairly well done. While the sushi rolls were not the best I've had, they're definitely decent. Sashimi was really fresh and the Vietnamese rice dish was great!
The owner and the friendly service is probably what sets this restaurant aside from others. It's not a big room and the owner came over with some complementary sake for me and my bf. He also surprised me with some sashimi art (several pieces of salmon sashimi presented in the shape of a rose, with a cucumber stem and wasabi leaves) Let's just say those little nice-ties definitely helps make a fabulous first impression on me =)
Value-wise, we were both stuffed with a little extra to-go for just over 20 bucks with tips. A great value I think, considering the sake and sashimi as well as the quality of food.
Returning home from an ill fated trip to the Boulevard Casino we thought we would have a bite to eat. Headed up North Road turned left on Cameron and enter the strip mall. For a small mall there was quite a variety of eateries. Settled on Japolo because someone wanted pho. Ordered 2 cali rolls, bowl of pho (only comes in 1 size) and a fried pork chop and chicken on rice. The rolls were ordered 10 minutes before the entrees so we could have them as appetizers. The pho came right away (passable), the pc and chick came 5 minutes later (looked dry but was tender and juicy). Finally the rolls showed up. Mildly upsetting so we just asked for a box to take them home. The tab was about $23.00. Very good value. Owner sushi guy seemed to know a lot of the customers and my guess it is a neighbourhood favourite. If I lived in the hood it would be on my favourites list too.
Our usual dinner gang decided to try this place based a whim. We were not disappointed. It is somewhat spartan inside, but everything was clean including the w/c. They had the big TV's tuned into a boxing match, which was popular with some of the customers. Service was terrific, and there were frequent tea top ups and quality checks.
The menu was pretty expansive, and they had Japanese and Vietnamese favorites. We had a selection of sushi, sashimi, tempura, and a big pot of sukiyaki. All were quite good, and we enjoyed all the food. Of particular note was the sukiyaki and the fried squid. Next time we will try some of the other menu items.
The price was right and at the end of the meal we all were full and content. Worth a try.
had lunch here last weekend with a friend. Ordered their pho, which was loaded with msg that it gave me a headache afterwards. Also there was very little meat, and the bean sprouts were bruised and not fresh. I also ordered a lunch box, which had over battered tempura, non-fresh sashimi and some noodles which was over sauced and did not taste very good at all.
Service was great, got constant tea refills and the server was cheerful. The only downside was the whole place only had 1 waitress, which made trying to get her pretty difficult.
Inside was clean, and decent. Price was it didn't seem cheaper than other similar places, and the pho seemed actually more expensive than usual for the portions received.
Cannot recommend due to the high amount of MSG and the poor quality ingredients.
I regularly order take out from this place usually getting the inside out roll combo for 10 bucks, I have never had a bad experience at this place. I have never eaten in the restaurant. Every time I order to go, it is always ready on time and I never have to wait. My boyfriend loves the rice bowls from this place. The only one complaint I have is that I have been wanting to try the Seafood Motoyaki for $5 dollars but everytime I ask for it they never have it. Other than that I really enjoy this place.
I've been here for a few years now and I've never grown tired of it. It's easy to miss this little place because it's in the corner of a Plaza.
Food - There's nothing bad about the food here. Their beef sashimi is addictive and totally worth the money. They have a larger portion than any other Japanese restaurant that I've been to (and for pretty much the same price). Their lunch boxes are a great deal for what you get with it. Their motoyakis always leave me drooling. I've tried every single item on their specials board and my favourite has to be either the Dragon Roll or the Platinum Roll. If you want something non-Japanese, you should try their Vietnamese rice dishes or even their Pho. I'm a Chinese-Vietnamese person myself so I know the difference between good Pho and horrible Pho. They have good Pho.
Service - The waitresses here are friendly. My tea is always refilled and they're always checking up on me and my boyfriend/friend (whomever I'm with that day). Whenever they're not busy they strike up (short) conversations with us. So I totally appreciate that. It gives me a relaxed happy feeling. It makes coming back worthwhile.
Value - Like I said, the lunch boxes are worth it. Even side orders (sushi combos and whatnot) are more than reasonable. Many other places would charge the same price for less food.
Ambiance - They're not flashy nor fancy but their decor still works. The washrooms are clean and the place looks clean and neat.
There are reasons why I keep coming back. :)
Was trying to decide what to eat and my daughter said she wanted sushi and a sandwich. Since this was walking distance to our home and we'd never been in this particular restaurant before, decided to check it out. Originally, I had ordered the Vietnamese subs which were on the menu but we were told that they don't make those at that location. No biggie, we ordered the Lunch Box A and Lunch Box B and a veggie maki and a kappa maki. Well, we got the veggie maki which was really good, but got a tekka maki instead of kappa. I didn't bother complaining since it started getting busy and my daughter was actually eating them, so no biggie.
The lunch boxes were also really good as the tempura was still fresh-tasting and not too heavy or greasy and the teriyaki didn't overpower everything, but I had told the waitress prior to serving us that my daughter and I are allergic to shellfish and needed to have all the tempura be veggie and no prawns. Unfortunately, she brought a salad with baby shrimp in it, so I did send that back and they served us another one. I'm going to assume that since we didn't have an allergic reaction, they didn't just pick off the shrimp like some places have.
I did like the fact that she offered the smoothies to go since I had asked for them last to make sure my daughter ate her meal.
With regards to the ambience, they had two TVs by a bar area playing the game. It just seemed a little out of place and distracting for a lunchtime meal, but overall, a decent experience.
This place is one of my favorites. I've eaten sushi in Richmond, North Van, Downtown Van, Coquitlam and I keep coming back here. The raw fish is always fresh, sushi tasty and hot dishes sizzzzling. The head chef is always pleasant, and very curteous. The staff are always quick to ensure my tea is topped up and I have what I need. Their sake is great! Really, I have nothing bad to say about this place - definately one of my favorites!
Value wise their prices are very reasonable. Wouldn't change a thing.
We have been coming here for years and eat here at least twice a month for dinner. It is not inexpensive, but the quality is excellent and we love the food here. You can spend $40 - $50 here and have an excellent dinner for 4 people! Don't start with the stuffed chicken wings or you willl never try anything else. The Olympic roll, gator roll, platinum roll are just a few of my favourites (watch the olympic though - it is almost $20 )- the other rolls are in the $8-10 range.
