My boss and I decided to go there for lunch today. This is another Korean-run Japanese restaurant. The people there were quite friendly, and the service was prompt and courteous. The place itself was quite dark on the inside, the front entrance was small, so not very noticible. Nothing too special about the decor, except for the black light-up menu on the back wallwhich has the chef's specials written on it. I thought it was just a little tacky.
They have quite an extensive menu. The food was average-priced, but definitely not on the cheap side. My boss ordered chicken teriyaki and dynamite roll while I ordered the chirashi don. The chicken teriyaki was served on a sizzling hot plate, which I thought was quite neat. The dynamite roll was big with lots of california roll filling, but could hardly taste the tempura shrimp on the inside. What I liked about it was the layer of rice on the outside was quite thin.
My chirashi don had a good variety of fish - smoked salmon, salmon, tuna, toro, surf clam, squid, chopped scallop and egg. The fish was ok, not the best cut, because I had some trouble biting into my salmon because it had a tough tendon (?) in the middle, and some of the fish was a little too watery from defrosting. The toro was good though, but the chopped scallop and the egg were so cold from being in the fridge that it was pretty tasteless.
One thing worth noting was that their wasabi was excellent!! I'm not sure if it was freshly grind, it sure tasted like it, it was really fresh and strong, just the way I like it.
Overall, not a bad lunch. They also have AYCE for those who love to eat lots!
We have eaten at this place a few times, and we have very mixed feelings about our experiences there. The restaurant itself is rather nice - small, cozy, and very clean. And all the staff are great - very welcoming and courteous to their customers. But the food seems to lack something, and is priced rather high, in comparison to some of the other small, neighbourhood Japanese restaurants we know and like.
We do usually enjoy the appetizers and small side-dish offerings - they are well-prepared and usually quite tasty. But the 'main' entrees are seldom up to the standards we get and enjoy elsewhere. We find most of dishes to be too "watery" and quite flavourless.
We like the restaurant itself and the staff, but find the food "wanting", and a little too high-priced. Thus, the reason I've rated it and the place lower than I wish I could.
with the crazy hot spell this week, i haven't wanted to cook for hubby and junior at all. so we decided to go for sushi for dinner, something light, and something cool for hubby, but warm cooked food for junior.
we weren't that hungry because of the heat, so didn't order as much as we would have normally for dinner. the server was warm and welcoming, and best of all, there was A/C on full blast!
We had california roll, house roll and the chicken donburi. hubby said the house roll was quite good, and the california roll was very fresh. junior liked the chicken donburi as well, overall the food was quite solid, the prices for the cooked food were a bit higher than what we normally pay, but not extrememly so. the roll prices were the average price, but i noticed that their "special rolls" were significantly more.
Overall, we would come again, but we are still on the hunt in for a fantastic sushi place in our neighbourhood.
This place is amazing. The food is delicious, the portions are generous and the service is exceptional. Furthermore, the prices are very reasonable. I called ahead for a pick-up order and when i got there my order was prepared and all ready to go. Soup, salad, and even napkins and chopsticks were all in the bag so i could begin eating right away when I got my order home. The owners are so welcoming and friendly it feels like home. This has definitely become one of my favourite restaurants.
I love Japanese food and have been to many Japanese restaurants. Huku-Ya is my favorite and I have been coming here for years. Hence the service is probably exceptional for me because the waitresses recognize me and therefore are especially helpful. In the past they have even offered me extra food items without charge.
When I first started coming here I fell in love with the udon noodles because they were so packed with flavour and a variety of fresh ingredients plus yummy tempura bits floating on the top. The rolls though I found to be average.
However in recent years they have expanded and improved on their rolls that they offer. The crispy roll with deep fried yam shavings on top and the mountain tempura rolls are fantastic.
I have brought many friends and extended family members here for dinner over the years and they have all enjoyed the service and the food. My only regret is that I don't venture out to this area as much as I use to when I would take my kids to their orthodontic appointments. If I am in the area though I definitely stop here for wonderful Japanese food and warm service.
I and my girlfriend go to this restaurant when we feel really hungry,
and at least 2 or 3 times a month, we make ourselves hungry only to go to hukuya because they have the best all you can eat menu in town.
Even tho there are not many, I've tried pretty much every japanese all you can eat's in burnaby and coquitlam area because I like the diversity when dinning.
All I can say now is that this restaurant is my best choice simply because their food is the best, and they have more items on the menu, not to mention that the staffs are very friendly.
One thing that makes this restaurant outstanding among other japanese all you can eat restaurants is that the food you order from all you can eat menu is not different from the regular menu items at all. (yes, they have a seperate regular menu, and I once thought this all you can eat was a specail offer or somethin becasue they call it special lol)
I mean, in other restaurants, when I order, say, california roll, I usually get the one with bigger roll of rice since they wanna make customers get stuffed faster, and that's how they save more money.
Well I don't exactly know how this restaurant manage this kind of matter, but I've never felt that they are doing the same thing.
Sashimis, nigiris and rolls are always fresh, and hot foods are always juicy, and their chicken teriyaky and tempura are best in town! man I love that I can have them all in my one night dinner.
