Hot spicy Szechuan food
Tried the Sunday lunch special. Pork with dried tofu and rice. First time I had dried tofu. Gimme the fresh stuff anytime. Good value for $5.95 but a lot of grease was evident. Partner had the fried noodles with vegetables $7.95 meh. If you are a party of 2 the seating is terrible. You are shoe horned into a narrow corridor. That alone is enough to make me stay away. Restroom okay. Won't be back. Better off eating at the Crystal Mall.
My gf and I drove by and saw a "Grand Opening" sign and decided to give it a try. It looked like a nice place, and the experience itself was okay, but there are places that really need work.
Food - 1.5 - The food was all spicy, which I'm okay with, I'm just not a big fan to begin with. The food itself was okay, something I don't see very often in Vancouver/Burnaby, very unique. We had the Hotluck Pot Combo, which was a pot of mixed meats and vegetables. The first few bites were good, but after that, all you can really taste was spiciness. The problem was that on the door there was a sign that said "no MSG added". these are usually misleading since the ingredients they used could be packed with MSG, but they didn't add any themselves. For the first time in years I had to get up in the middle of the night and get a drink.
Service - 3.5 - Service was pretty solid, there were 2 servers for a pretty small place and they always seemed around but it never felt like they were watching you. An older women, who I assumed was the owner, brought food to a table were the man had step away, and she spent an extra 10-15 seconds just organizing things on the table to put the utensils in the right places and the dishes to be accessible. I thought that deserved to be mentioned.
Value - 1.5 - With the Hotluck Pot combo, we were suppose to get the pot and 2 appetizers. When I ordered the appetizers it turned out that you can only get 2 of the vegetable ones, not our choice. In order to get the meat dishes, we needed to add a dollar, even though on the menu, they were the same price. The pot itself was huge and filled with mostly vegies and some meat. For the meat it was mostly ham with some chicken and beef. After paying $33 + taxes and tips, I felt that for the price we should have got more meat.
Ambiance - 3.5 - Hotluck was a nice small place, nicely decorated. The only thing that held the score back is that the tables were really grouped in 2 corners and if a bigger party was there, it would feel uncomfortable if you were a smaller party.
Overall - 2.5 - I really though this place was going to be good. The service and the ambiance was good, but the menu needs some work. The combos with appetizers were misleading as well as the no msg sign on the door. I probably won't come back here, but if you're curious, its probably worth a try.
