A window-wrapped dining room offers a commanding view of the surrounding park-like setting; Burnaby and Vancouver below, as well as views of Burrard Inlet and Indian Arm. Nestled in beautiful Burnaby Mountain Park, Horizons overlooks the bright city lights below. Specializing in steaks and seafood grilled over an open flame, enjoy Chef John Garrett's West Coast inspired cuisine and dine in an elegant setting with a warm ambiance.
I live in the valley, work in Burnaby and eat at Horizons quite often. I had lunch there yesterday with an associate of mine and it was fantastic ! The bread salad was delicious and the prawns in coconut-chili sauce were amazing. The desserts are great ( I have tried all of them ! ) and especially recommend the blueberry cheesecake or the coconut panna cotta. The dining room has windows all around to enjoy the view, there is not a bad seat in the house. As I said before , I eat there alot and the service is always very good, the servers are well groomed and professional and really know how to make you feel welcome. Overall this really is a great restaurant. The food and service are consistently good and the ambiance & view cannot be beaten. I will definitely be back for more !!
Decided to give Horizons a try on a nice Spring evening because I had heard so much about the spectacular view. I started with the Crab Cakes which were pretty unremarkable to say the least. It wasn't that they were terrible, but they weren't good as well. Just felt that they lacked flavour and the texture was kind of different. You could tell that they weren't using all crab and if they were it wasn't Dungeness. For main course I decided to go with the Rack of Lamb. I don't usaully order Rack of Lamb because for the price at most restaurants it isn't worth the price. It was cooked Medium Well which wouldn't have been a problem except for the fact I ordered it Medium Rare. I flagged down the server and let her know about it and she basically told me that I was out of luck with getting a new one done the way I asked for it. How is that? Didn't make much sense at all to me but didn't want to push it further and it become a bigger deal. Found the overall preperation of the dish to be lacking any sort of imagination at all. Ended up skipping dessert because up to this point I just wasn't pleased overall with the quality of the food. In closing it is quite clear that this restaurant is resting on its view and its almost like the food and service are an after thought. The menu could use a major overhaul as well. It just seems very, very dated. This restaurant I'm sure appeals to the older crowd but I don't think I would recommend it to the 30 and under crowd.
After calling the Horizons Staff and asking for directions to the restaurant from West Vancouver, we were lead everywhere in Burnaby except for the restaurant. The poor directions caused us to be late for our reservation which lead us not to have a window seat, as the short stocky hostess questioned our reservation.
The West Coast atmosphere of the restaurant really was quite exquisite. the scenic totems and mountainesque view really gave a dining experience which was quite enjoyed for our dinner party. Our server was quite pleasant as she shared many of her personal stories with the members of our party. We ordered the Seafood Chowder and the Goat cheese. First of all, the chowder looked as if it had been sitting on the counter for several days and reheated upon its arrival. The goat cheese was appetizing, yet the portion was shockingly small given the price. My wife ordered the cioppino bowl, which had more shells and broth than actual seafood. The most enjoyable item we ordered was our 11 year old sons tomato linguine. I am feeling reluctant on returning to Horizons Restaurant, if the food was as excellent as the service, I would gladly revisit.
We took my Father there for his special birthday and had called a week in advance to reserve a special table by the window for him...only to find when we arrived a family just before us got the last table by the window...(and they were walk-ins with NO reservation!!) when I spoke to the manager we were told that the window seating is really first come first serve...this was very upsetting as we were told when we booked our reservations that they would definately take good care of us...it was not our first time to Horizons...it has been 3 times that this has happened and each time when you call they promise a table by the window even with a early reservation...it is always given away!! The management should at least have the courtesy to be honest and let people know this when they call in...it sounds picky....but the right seating is very important!! Makes the night just that much better.
