i was wandering aimlessly the other day and thinking of checking out the wonton place close to hong sushi. I didnt remember that there was a sushi restaurant here. i checked out the menu and was happy to see that wild sockeye was on the menu (although not what i wanted to eat that day, i just like to check if places carry it)
i went in and chose my seat looking out onto hastings (not a bad part of hastings fyi) my table was a clean black granite bar and my chair was a parsons bar stool covered in clean faded black cotton. pretty comfortable. the place was empty so i could've also taken a table for four (i think there were 3-4 of them plus the bar which had 3-4 stools)
i was pleased to see that they had a creamcheese smoked salmon roll and was thinking of getting that plus a spicy tuna roll. at the last minute the specials board caught my eye and i got the house special: spicy tuna and dynamite rolls plus miso soup and ebi (shrimp) sunomono salad for 7.95 or so.
by the way i was served chilled water in a larger plastic disposable cup (think cold drink at starbucks)
got the miso soup right away (everything is served in/on disposable plastic) i was not too excited to see fake crab floating on it but i removed it and the oup was perfect. a nice surprise was the good amount of leafy seaweed at the bottom (none of the places ive tried in proximity of my new location add this!)
got the food extremely quickly. the rolls were very very neat. the spicy tuna was fresh and the spicy sauce had mayo which to me adds so much (but has become less common)
dynamite roll was also fresh and had enough avocado and lots of cucumber. both rolls had lots of filling and not too much rice which i think is idea.
sunomono was a very large serving and also tasted fresh
i was quite full without finishing the sunomono. walked to the counter and paid right away (there was no waiting at all during the meal)
ambiance was not bad, hong kong pop music was playing.3-4 groups came in to order out/sit down/pick up after me
have since returned for take out and got the wild salmon rolls for 2.75 each and they were large (and neat) compared to some other places nearby. also got the dynamite roll again. my family members enjoyed the food too.
My brother told me about this place. At first it didn't sound very good to me but I gave it a try & I've been going back ever since. This is the best bang for your buck sushi place I've ever been to! The place is kind of small & I've never eaten inside nor would I ever want to. I always get take out here. The food is great & the prices are greater. They have some good deals like the sushi combo, 18 pieces & miso soup for $6 taxes in. Or the teriyaki chicken bento box for $7 taxes in. You get 6 pieces on california roll, salad, chicken on top of rice & 2 pieces of nigiri sushi, 1 salmon, 1 tuna. This little place is always quick & easy, CHEAP and the food is great.
This place is really affordable and you get a lot of food!! The bento box's are great, just remember this place mostly does 'to-go' orders. Great rolls, one of my favorite places to order from when you are on a budget!! It's a really small restaurant, the outside and inside decor is deceiving because this place is great, very popular too.
In previous review that someone mentioned the rice amount in their sushi roll is huge. Was it a joke? Cant be THIN anymore. The price is cheap, but portion is small. If you dont have time to dine in a decent sushi restaurant, you can still try this take-out place. QUICK, CHEAP, but small portion.
From the outside Hong Sushi looks average. Hidden amongst a salon and a deli, you could easily miss it, if it wasn't for the specials board outside.
Inside it's an average take away sushi place. Very little seating, plastic plates and cups, people coming in and out picking up orders.
But where Hong Sushi shines is the food and value. And its open Sundays!
The salmon sushi is one of the best I've had in the city, and the teriyaki dishes are delicious too. I can't wait to go back and try out their "house rolls".
All in all, a great place to go for sushi if your in Burnaby, and don't want the hassle of all you can eat.
It may not look like much from the outside but the place is clean and the sushi is fresh and well prepared. It is geared for take out rather than a sit down experience. I used to go to SushiTown which is good but the quality here is superior and the rolls have way more filling than rice...so well worth it. I'd definitely recommend it.
Great little place for sushi. I've taken the family here a few times and the food and service has always been good. Not a big restaurant by anymeans, more geared towards take out. I notice everytime we're there that people are constantly picking up orders.
Prices are great compared to other japanese restaurants.
I have no problem at all recommending this place!
