Had lunch here a little while ago since I saw they were under new management. Had a lunch combo and it was huge. It came with miso soup, a bowl of rice and a large box filled with chicken, tempura, salad and sashimi. It was quite good and the portions were much larger than most other lunch boxes I have tried. It was a little under $10 and I was stuffed. Service was decent, although they tend to reach over people sometimes.
I haven't tried dinner there yet, but definitely would be back for their lunch boxes.
Went with our family and were very impressed with the friendly service and excellent food. The portions were very generous and the price was very reasonable. It is also under new owners (hence, "New" Hibiki"). We tried the Mango roll (yummily delicious!) and the Honeymoon Roll (tasted like a banana split roll! - very pleasantly surprised).
We tried delivery with Hibiki sushi seeing as its one of the very few restaurants that does delivery in the Burnaby/New West area before 6pm. My advice to you straight off is to not even go with Hibiki. Not only did their delivery take over an hour, the food was horrible.
We ordered at about noon and the food came an hour later. We called and ordered about $50 worth of food for the three of us. Then we waited, waited and waited...only to get a call from Hibiki letting us know about 40 minutes later that there would be a $5 charge for delivery. Which is, in every regard, fair but the fact that they told us ten minutes before our food arrived is unfair to the payers. This delivery fee policy is not on their menu and they did not confirm our knowledge of this policy in our first conversation.
The food itself was not worth it at all and overall unpleasant. The tempura looked old and tasted unfresh, the sushi itself was of strange colors and the ingredients just did not taste good. If you're looking for somewhere that delivers, don't settle with this place like we did.
I've got food here twice now, once as a takeout (actually delivery, which is a first for me for sushi) at a friend's house and then an impromptu visit to eat in.
Both experiences were surprisingly good. First time (takeout) was mainly sashimi and a fresh cucumber roll. The sashimi was really rather good - in that it was fresh and came in decent portions. The roll was rather brilliant. Strips of cucumber formed the outside (rather than rice) and a filling of an assortment of fishy things and extras. No rice, really fresh tasting.
Later went in for a quick bite to relive the cucumber roll experience. This time I added prawn tempura and spinach gomae. Both perfectly nice and the tempura was pretty impressive.
No hesitation in recommending - don't let the ratings I put in make you think its average - the food is good, was almost tempted to give 4, but its not 'Outstanding'. Its location is a bit meh, but the inside is pretty fresh.
Happens to be close to work too... I see good sushi lunches in my future.
They have good sushi.
I don't like their cooked food.
I had a feeling that the sushi chefs were the same chefs in the kitchen. We went there with other friends, all the sushi dishes were served first and the cooked dishes took forever to come out. I noticed the sushi chefs were 'gone' from the sushi bar. They were probably cooking in the kitchen.
I will just go there for sushi.
My girlfriends and I decided to try out Hibiki Sushi the other day. We ordered the spicy roll combo and a teriyaki rice box. The spicy rolls were good but the teriyaki beef was horrifying. It tasted like cornstarch and flour. When we notified the server she told us in a rude tone that "no one else ever complained about the teriyaki beef and maybe we should try somewhere else." I've worked in the service industry before and I know for a fact that saying that to a customer is a no no. We promptly paid and left. I am disappointed by the way the server handled our complaint. It's a shame because the ambiance is cute and the rolls were good but definitely not good enough to overshadow the terrible beef. If you do decide to go, DON'T ORDER THE TERIYAKI BEEF! In the future, I'll definitely be going to a different sushi restaurant.
