Gilmore serves Canadian and Chinese cuisine
They have a regular selection of daily specials and lunch specials. Lunch speicals are $5.25. It includes an entree plus soup. A great value that really fills you up. We ordered a cheese burger and fries lunch special and a chow mein lunch special. We had a choice of their daily soup (which was chicken soup) or salad. The soup was really good. Not the average soup from a can. Lots of noodles and had actual bits of chicken meat. The burger was large. Pretty decent with a home-made patty, lettuce, tomatoe, a slice of cheese and mayo I think. The chow mein had more chicken than we expected. It was all over the noodles so they weren't going cheap on the meat. Refills on coffee were provided. Service is okay. It's a family-run restaurant so there was only one woman/owner running around to take orders/serve the food/refill coffee/give us the bill. The furniture is a bit old. I think are from the 70's or 80's. I will come back for the deals.
For a blast from the past, try the Gilmore Restaurant. It actually makes you feel like you're back in an old Canadian Chinese restaurant from the 70's/80's. With that said, the prices are very decent and probably still comparable to those from the 80's, and the portions are huge for the price you pay.
If you're looking for cheap eats, this restaurant is consistently listed in the Province and the Burnaby Now for Cheap and Decent. If you haven't tried it, I would recommend any of the lunch specials that run from $5.50 from 12-3 on Monday-Friday. Their weekend specials are not bad either and you get a soup or salad with the specials.
The dinner specials are not bad either. It's the only place where you can still get a 6-10oz steak for less than $14.
As for the service, well it's family owned and operated and they work hard at it. So cheap and decent would best characterize this place the best.
I give the food a 2 because it is decent/solid in my opinion. The service is good and I'm served very promplty. Value wise, for $5.50 for a burger, fries and soup, I can't really beat it anywhere else. And a steak dinner for less than $14 is still hard to do anywhere else these days. Ambiance rating of 3 is because the furniture, booths, tables and chairs are dated...from the 70's or 80's. It's kinda like being in a restaurant from the TV shows Dallas, the Duke's of Hazzard or Knight Rider.
Have seen this place along Hastings in North Burnaby for sometime, but ignored it. Finally, we had breakfast on Saturday and got so delighted we went back the next day for afternoon snacks! The breakfast omelets are great, the coffee bottomless and the service by the owner herself is unparalleled. Her husband is the chef. The chicken chow mien has lots of yummy meat, but I would have preferred more veggies too. The place was reasonably busy yet quiet. The room looks old, they've been in business close to 20 years, and better lighting could cheer it up. Next time, we'll try the lamp chops and steak specials.
