A small sushi restaurant in the HighGate area.
It doesn't take a lot for a sushi restaurant to impress me, as long as the food tastes good, I am happy.
Fresh Box made the worst sushi I have ever had. It is worse then the day-old sushi trays that you can buy on discount at the deli in Save-On.
Mainly, the quality of the food was incredibly low and portions of sushi that I received were the smallest I have ever seen for sushi rolls, even for take-out. I ordered 27 dollars worth of food and didn't feel that I got my money's worth in comparison to other sushi restaurants. The food was prepared carelessly and didn't taste good at all.
A breakdown of what I ordered, and complaints:
The california rolls were bland, stale, did not have a lot of flavour. The avacado rolls were not prepared well, each roll hardly had any avacodo and the rolls were falling apart. The agedashi tofu was the worst I have ever eaten, it was soggy and wasn't cooked evenly, and was sitting in a pool of oil. The yam tempura was so greasy it left my stomach feeling ill. The tamago nigiri tasted a sour, as though the egg was getting old.
Overally, it was a frustrating experience. I would not suggest this restaurant to anyone.
I have to say, I love sushi and hate bad sushi, this is one of them,(hate) I thought I give this restaurant a try since Nau sushi was closed. I ordered Dynamite roll and a BC roll and California roll. The rice tasted old. The BC roll had very little Salmon in the roll put lots of California roll filer same as the dynamite roll very little shrimp and lots of California roll filler. Never again, as the old saying goes fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. never again. To like this place you really have to be in a hurry and not have any real taste for sushi.
We went here for lunch after waiting in line at Hi Genki for 15 mins - would have waited longer if we did not have an appointment to get to.
Fresh Box definitely fits the bill for fresh and fast. We had 5 maki rolls (California, Dynamite, BC, Unagi and Philidelphia) and miso soup. The soup was the packaged variety - but edible.
The rolls were big and stuffed with lots of fresh fillings. They definitely did not skimp on the size. The tempura in the Dynamite roll was especially nice and crisp and the smoked salmon on the Philly roll was very fresh and not fishy-smelling.
The prices were good, around $2.50 - $4.75 for rolls.
Unfortunately there is very limited seating at this place as it is mostly take-out oriented. Also you must order from the menu on the counter which is a little awkward since it is pretty extensive - especially if you are there for the first time.
Service is polite and friendly and the girl at the counter cleared a table for us when the one we wanted had some dishes on it from someone who had just left.
The sushi came in record time, 5 mins from the time we ordered - but nothing tasted pre-made and nothing looked sloppy or rushed. They have two chefs behind the counter so that probably is why it was so fast.
The only negative thing we can really think of is that most of our sushi was served on a bamboo tray which was not lacquered, so the rice would stick to it and it was hard to pull off some of the rolls.
We would definitely stop by here again for a quick sushi lunch, next time we will try some items with fresh (raw) fish to see how they do in that area.
We have been visiting this place since they opened and have always found the food fresh and tasty. Although they don't have much of a seating area, for quick take out sushi it is amazing. The girl behind the counter is always pleasant and the two Sushi chefs seem to know what they are doing. Always clean, tasty food, good size portions and friendly service make it our place of choice. Don't take a date there though as the Ambiance is somewhat lacking. But for take out it's amazing.
I've had sushi from Fresh Box a couple of times, and there sushi is undoubtedly tasty and fresh. Service was nice, and the interior is very clean and new.
However, I think their sushi portions are small and thus, overpriced when compared to other sushi shops I've been to.
I'd only recommend Fresh Box seeing how the other sushi restaurants in the Highgate area are pretty underwhelming.
I go there almost once a week. It's a restaurant that runs by Korean people, however, their sushi is very good. I ordered salmon nigiri sushi, hot night roll and deep california (deep fried california roll) in my last visit. They were all made right away and the salmon and sashimi on the hot night roll were really fresh. Deep california was made right away as well, that's why I waited around 15 mins for the my food.
The restaurant is small but very clean. The service was efficient, and the staff are friendly in general. A great place for take-out sushi!
