Italian bakery on Hastings in Burnaby
I came into Burnaby, knowing this bakery and picked up fresh portuguese buns and rolls. I love the smell of fresh bread baking, and they had warm rolls and that lead me to other items. It can be hard to restrain yourself, due to everything looking & smelling good, you could walk out with more than you planned to buy.
I walked in at a good time, not too busy, which this place is very popular any day of the week.
I will be back.
I'm surprised to see this in here. btw, it's bakery, not barkey.
Fortuna makes the best portuguese buns in the city! They also have very good dessert items here. I often buy a bunch whenever I'm heading off to a dinner party, or hosting one. My favorites are the custard horns and the custard fruit pastries.
Cornish pasties are good, they have awesome fresh baked breads. They even offer well-priced deli meats!
They just recently expanded their shop area to include hot eats like rotisserie chicken and roasted potatoes and rice.
This is a great bakery!
My gourmet friend brought me here to buy the best Italian bread buns in the lower mainland. She was right! The buns were fantastic. We grilled up some Italian sausages from Bossa's that night slapped them on the buns and had a fabulous meal.
While in the shop she bought us some Italian donuts (not sure what they are really called) to snack on. They were a treat, warm, fresh, fragrant and delicious.
We have passed by this bakery many times and finally decided to go in to give it a try. Upon entering the first thing we noticed were the rather large amounts of flies flying around. Mind you, this is during March as the weather isn't even that warm yet in Burnaby so it makes me question the cleanliness of the bakery.
None of the pastries displayed in cases had labels or prices which made ordering them very difficult. The employee who was serving us seemed really annoyed as we asked about the different pastries and scowled through the entire process.
When we asked to buy a loaf of bread off the shelf she just reached up and grabbed it with her hands without tongs or gloves. Very unsanitary, it didn't help that she was also wearing black nail polish which is really unsuitable for an employee who prefers to grab food with her bare hands. At the end of the transaction the employee did not smile or even say thank you.
The pastries and loaf of bread was alright. But the terrible service we received will ensure we won't be visiting again. Much rather go to Valley Bakery down a couple of blocks where the store is clean and the employees are much friendlier.
