I've been here a half dozen times or so. The food is very reasonably priced & tasty - I've never had a bad dish. Great place for a quick, tasty, inexpensive lunch. The decor is Chinese restaurant-ish, but you don't come for the ambiance. It's clean & there is always a table available, even though the restaurant is often busy.
Mrs. C and I were craving Chinese chow and we decided to give this place a try based on the reviews on this site. The restaurant is in a slightly seedy part of the Heights, but we weren't too worried about our car.
The restaurant was very taupe-ish inside and the carpet was amazingly dirty. Other than that is was okay, and the w/c was old but tidy. Service was friendly and quick throughout the meal. We ordered Shanghai fried noodles with beef, and yin yang chow fan (aka honeymoon fried rice). Both were tasty, but the portion sizes were smaller than expected.
As for value, we ate well for about 20 bucks including tip.
Works for me.
Stopped for lunch while shopping in the area. Had the lunch specials. Beef brisket with soup and noodles and the stir fried rice noodle with beef. Decent for the price $4.95 each. Looked at the dinner menu but was not impressed. More Canadian than Chinese. Checked out the restroom and found it quite acceptable considering the overall tiredness of the building. In a pinch its okay but not suitable for a special meal.
This is my first review for Double One, but I have been dining here for the last
10 years, The food and service has always been outstanding. The Portions are pretty good
for the price. I think Double One has been here in BBY for the last 25 years. The Host/Waiter/Owner always greets us with a smile. This place is a hidden gem for sure. If you have not tried this place before, I highly recommend it. always packed on weekends so go early!
I used to go to this restaurant twice a week for about 5 years. I worked in the area and lived there. My family and friends live in the area too. I would say I spend on average $40/week there. Any family gathering, lunch with co-workers, take out, dine out was here. Loved the food, soups were great, we knew the owner and all the workers and they treated us well. All it took was one lunch where the owner was incredibly rude to myself and my guest because they were in a hurry and asked about the food. Granted, it was busy that day but still, after all that patronage, the comment he made was not acceptable. As a result, I have not been back for 3 years and luckily have found a new top 2 for chinese restaurants in N Burnaby.
Good Chinese Food..Very filling
This is the usual Chinese restaurant my family and I eat at..If we want Chinese food delivered to our house or for a pick up for dinner we go to Double One....Family members also dines here on regualer basis...Food is cheap, and you get LOTS of portions...
you will never go home hungry....ambiance needs work though, but i'm not there to look at the decor of the restaurant, I'm there to eat!
waitresses and owner/manager of the store are really sweet! They acutually know us cause we eat there all the time..
i recomened this place...
The lunch specials here are awesome. From $4.50-$5.50 a dish, you can get your favorite dishes a-la-carte.
The food is just as good as any other cantonese style Chinese retaurant, the service is alright, not the best, but ok for what it is and the furniture has probably seen better days. But for $4.50 for a plate full of sweet and sour pork on rice or chow mein or fried rice or whatever, it is hard to beat for value.
Their luncheon specials are pretty reasonable. Good value for food ratio. Their portions are of good size. The Beijing Duck in two courses for $18.95 is a good bet.
They must have changed chefs because the food tasted better before.
And my black bean sauce chicken chow mein was laden with too much bland cornstarch. And the chef did not par boil the noodles before sautéing them in the wok.
Hey… What do you expect for $5.95?
The food has become tastier, the service is quick, the management is good. Nice to see friendly staff, courteous and helpful if you require an opinion on ordering food which you're not sure of.
Nice restaurant for family get-togethers. I see lots of orders for delivery or pick-up, that tells you that people enjoy the food. They serve a good hearty bowl of: Duck with wonton and noodle soup - very generous portion.
Double One is a great place to go for a Sunday Luncheon or when ordering some fast Chinese takeout. If you're in the mood for a quick Chinese food fix, then this is the place in ALL of Burnaby to go to.
Though the food seems to have slipped in the last 3 or 4 years, it is still quite good. (Especially considering what you pay!) A few times I have ordered Yongchow Fried Rice, only to find that there were eggshells in them. The deep fried squid with spicy salt and hot pepper is often delicious, but at times, the flavour is uneven and I can taste whatever flour or powdered mix they're using to give the squid its texture. The Wonton Soup has ALWAYS been amazing. It's the most consistent dish I have ordered here. Their mini tenderloin steaks in a special sauce are also to die for. There are a number of dishes there, and everyone is likely to find at least one or two that suit their taste buds.
The service is impeccable! I am always greeted warmly by Tony & his staff. They go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable and feel like you're at home. I must say, however, that the restaurant does need a bit of a fix-up...the walls look like they could crumble at any minute! This is probably why I've opted for take-out in the last little while.
Overall, this is a great place to visit when you're with close friends, and are looking to share some great times, good food and be treated to great service! I can't see myself going elsewhere for Chinese food in Burnaby!
Been here a few times for lunch only. The lunch specials are roughly $4.50 - $5.50 which I think is pretty cheap. Nothing fancy but the food is good definitely worth the price. Spicy fried squid is good, salty but good. Pan fried beef noodles are good too. Good spot for a quick, cheap decent lunch if your in the neighbourhood. Service is always friendly and fast the times i have been there.
Visited this place for a later (8pm) Saturday dinner; menu offered a good variety of items and prices seem very reasonable; Being a bit tired and lazy we opted for 'Dinner for Two' off the back page of the menu. It was OK and somewhat predictable. Egg rolls were decent; both the sweet and sour pork and the beef chop suey could have used a little bit more pork and beef respectively. Chow mein noodles were good;
Service friendly and attentive. Worth a repeat visit if I found myself in the neighborhood again.
