Delicias de Alicia opened in March 2010 and offers authentic Cuban lunches and dinners with generous portions and modest prices. Not licensed but they do offer a selection of Latin American soft drinks.
I first went to this restaurant about a month ago. A friend in the us encouraged me to try Cuban food and so I searched on google and other sites. This was one of the restaurants I found. I went to another one as well, but that is the subject of another review. On my first visit, I had the first item, the cooked black beans with pork ribs, white rice and salad. The portions were very generous, food was tasty and not spicy at all. The host, Rolf was very friendly, engaging and considerate of my needs. I went there a second time with a friend about a week later and had the fricasee of pork loin. My friend found the meal too big and packed some of the plantains home for his wife. They were larger than he was used to. I should mention that Rolf takes your name down to keep track of how many times you come. Once you come 10 times, you get a free meal. The second time I went I took a peek at the kitchen. Rolf keeps it very clean in there. This is an overlooked gem. If you haven't had any Cuban food before, you are in for a treat!
My wife and I tried cuban food for the first time. I ordered pork and my wife ordered fish. We really loved both the food. Food tastes awesome!
The service was really friendly. Owners are very hospitable.
If you eat there 10 times the 11th time your meal is free. ;-)
I would recommend this place to anyone!
I'm from Toronto and last fall I was on a business trip and while driving behind MetroTown I saw this place and I had to come back. I came back to BC and stopped in for lunch. The owners Alicia and Rolf are wonderful, honset and genuine people. I visited Cuba 7 times and ate at many restaruants in La Habana (to real Cuban's, that's how you spell it and say it). I had the pescado frito with arroz congir and Yuca con mojo. I have to say that the food was very authentic! Unbelievable! I felt like I was in Cuba having lunch in a cafe in the prado! Alicia and Rolf made me feel like I was in Cuba! We shared our mutual love for Cuba, it's people and culture! I highly recommend Delicias de Alicia for real Cuban food! Bring your friends, bring your family, you will not be disappointed! Viva Cuba Libre!
This place has the best Latin food I've ever eaten in the Lower Mainland.
The proprietors here are wonderful people and they make you feel genuinely welcome.
The service is spot on. The value for the meal is excellent.
Definitely, go there for a meal you will not be disappointed at all.
This small cafe has very generous portions so if you go, make sure you are really hungry.
Owners are very hospitable and friendly. Food tastes awesome, not spicy.
Ask for their "Flan", best flan i've ever tasted. There is parking at the back of the store but it fills up fast.. don't park in the wrong spot.
Ok so I have driven by this place on a daily basis since it opened and since it's only a couple blocks from my work I thought I would try it out with a co-worker today.
I ordered the chicken fricasee meal ($10.50)which came with a salad, tostones(deep fried plantains) and stewed chicken with rice and blackbeans. The salad was fresh and they have a homemade dressing made from oil, lemon juice and garlic. A pretty basic salad but nevertheless I thought it was good. The deep fried plaintains i really enjoyed. They were not a wee bit greasy or oily and lightly salted. The chicken was stewed to perfection in a light tomato sauce which didn't overpower the tase of the chicken. The meat fell off the bone and melted in my mouth. The rice I really enjoyed too which is surprising because I am not a real big fan of rice to begin with but I thought it was great and had some nice spice to it. I had the flan for dessert which was soooooo yummy!
My co-worker had the same lunch as I had and was looking forward to taking his wife there next time.
The owners are the nicest people you could possibly meet. They really make you feel welcomed and they really have a lot of pride in their food. This isn't a place for a romantic dinner with your partner, this is a place to eat real, delicious homecooked cuban food at very reasonable prices considering the portions they give you. We were quite full after and it was a 'good feeling' full not like the way you feel full after eating fast-food.
I would recommend this place to anyone and I honestly look forward to my next visit. They even take your name down and if you eat there 10 times the 11th time your meal is free.
P.S. They now have proper plateware and no longer use plastic or paper plates
my husband and I tried cuban food for the first time today, and we really loved both the food here. Especially loved how the owners of the restaurant were so friendly and it felt like we had been invited to their home for dinner. The portions were generous too. Highly recommend this place!
I found this place almost by accident through a friend of mine and decided to try it.
I was extremely pleased with the food, flavourful and well cooked. My choice was the "Tamal en Cazuela" (corn meal on a plate, with chicken pieces and seasoned to lick your fingers). I accompanied my dich with hot "tostones" (flat, deep fried green plantains). They make an excellent combination. Desert? Well,... I was really satisfied as portions are huge, but I tried the papaya chunks in syrup.
The owners, cooks, and waiters -Alicia and her husband Rolf-, are a friendly couple that will make you feel at home, asking for feedback as your Mom would do. They simply love people to enjoy what they cook.
Don't expect luxury or fancy stuff. Actually they are temporarily using disposable dinnerware. If you go, do it for the food and informal, familiar ambience.
I walked in to this place not knowing what to expect. I've never had Cuban food before.
I ended up getting stewed pork, rice& beans, and the yucca. The stew was very flavorful, and the yucca was delicious, very lemony. I was tired and hungry and the huge portions hit the spot.
Vegetarians: Don't avoid this place because there are no specifically vegetarian options on the menu - they can accommodate your diet and build you an excellent meal.(I noticed this specifically because some of my friends are vegetarians)
People with food allergies/sensitivities: They also said they didn't use dairy or soy sauce in their food - Yes! We've been looking for a place like this for a long time. I'm 99% sure their food is wheat-free too.
Apparently they deliver but I live so close I can just walk there.
I will definitely go back.
