Mrs. C and I were craving a little Euro food action and we decided to give this place a try. The restaurant used to be a Greek place, and it looks like they recycled the old fixtures. There were nice murals on the walls, but otherwise it looked the same as its last incarnation. The staff were busy drinking in a corner of the restaurant and service was somewhat slow. As for cleanliness, they really need to work on that. The place was quite dingy. The w/c was old and not so nice.

We both had the specials this time out. I had the hortobagy lamb, which was a lamb steak with paprika gravy and sides of red cabbage and spätzle. My beloved dining companion had a chicken kebab with sides of coleslaw and rice. Both dishes were tasty, but the portion sizes were quite small. As for value, I put it at the middle of the spectrum for this type of food.

We were the only customers in the place on a Friday at dinner time, so I have my doubts as to its life expectancy.

slow service with not so great lunch specials

I had lunch here with my coworkers last week, to a not crowded lunch hour on Friday. I had a lunch special, of beef with gravy and dumplings. The restaurant was quite big and only had 2 other tables, so i thought the service would be fast. It took quite a long time before the food came out, more than 30 minutes after we had ordered, even though only one other table was waiting for food.

When I got my food I was a little surprised as I didn't expect dumplings to be little pieces of bread. The beef was only lukewarm but tasted pretty good. My coworkers food looked a bit better, but the most popular item on the menu by far seemed the beer. it took quite a long time for the waitress to get and process the bill, but at least she seemed friendly.

The restaurant is dated but seemed pretty nice with the skylights.

Probably would not return, as it was neither fast, cheap or good enough for an office lunch getaway, which would probably explain their lack of customers.

What happened?

The little Budapest Restaurant used to be my favourite place in the Lower Mainland: simple family-run place, great Hungarian food, nice beer selection, and superb desserts. I am not sure why it closed. Perhaps more importantly, I am not sure why the Danube, which opened several months later by the same owners, has none of the attributes of the Budapest. Most of the Budapest's best dishes are not on the revamped menu, and the atmosphere is terrible. The menu looks like that of a cheap hotel restaurant, especially with its tacky, unappetizing pictures of the various entrees. The Vancouver metro area is already extremely poor when it comes to very-underrated Eastern European cuisine, so it is all the more disappointing to discover that the Danube is such an unworthy successor to the Budapest.
