Non-Japanese sushi restaurant in Highgate, diagonally across from the Save-on, in the small strip mall where Sushi House is also located. Standard menu choices.
Had lunch here a few weeks ago, and had a lunch combo box and my friend had one of their daily specials, black cod box.
The floor was sticky and so was my table. Against my better judgment I stayed to order and waited for the food. The food came in a reasonable time frame, less than 20 minutes. We saw the waitress clean up another table, with a quick swipe of a cloth and obvious food particles still on the table.
The food was quite poor, the quality was poor all around. The fish didn't seem fresh, and the salad dressing they used was quite poor. The tempura seemed fine to good though. The black cod was extremely small portion wise, but tasted standard.
Service was minimally acceptable, they took our order, and refilled our tea once right before we were about to go. the tea i found flavorless and was just like warm water.
Would not return.
we went to dai sushi once a week. they offer very good sushi there. stuff is friendly and in very good service.
and food is in good quality always. the price is cheap as well. avarage less then $10. their special roll is in very high quality. it is very worth the price. the one i love most is they are doing take out for 15% off and free delivery all day.
great job always. we love it
First off I notice that it is shown here to have much higher food prices than is truly on the menu. I never pay any more than $9 a meal.
My family has eaten here ever since this restaurant opened. We often dine in but for the most part order it in when we have family gathering with our usual gang of 11-13 people. As with most restaurants there are good days and exceptional days for the food. With all of the picky eaters in our family this has been the place of choice for all of us and will continue to be.
I'm not sure why there are so many bad reviews. We've been going here since we moved to the area mid 2009. After trying some other sushi joints in the area, we have decided this is THE place we always get sushi from. Best prices for the quality of roll. 75% of the time we get takeout and it has always been fresh and on time. But when we have taken friends out for dinner the staff has always been friendly and food just as good. The only suggestion is I wish it was open a bit later so that I could pick up a roll after late work nights. I HEART DaiSushi.
Yes, the sushi here isn't the best, but it's definitely far from the worst. The prices are very good ($3 for a dynamite roll, $2.75 california roll, $6.50 boxes, etc.) and the only real complaint I have about the sushi is the rice is a little bit "Chinese" as someone mentioned. But overall, I would definitely go back.
I have been to this restaurant a couple of times now with the kids. Usually we go for lunch since the specials are so decently priced. But last night we went for dinner and service as usual was prompt. We enjoy going to this restaurant more so than Sushi House because of the ambiance (like the last poster noted) and we feel that we can relax here.
The sizes of the pieces of sushi are actually really well done, since you should not have to bite the pieces in half and here you don't have to do this. The quality of the fish though does leave something to be desired. Last night we shared a Smoked Salmon Roll and a Yam Tempura Roll. Both rolls were nicely sized/cut to be able to eat in one bite, which is less messy. But the Smoked Salmon Roll was not great in my opinion. There was very little smoked salmon (just a very thin piece on top of the roll) and mostly avocado and tuna and rice. The Yam Tempura Roll was very tasty though. I also had the Tuna and Salmon Don and one of the kids had the Salmon Don. Both of us noticed that the pieces of fish were large in size (which definitely did not translate to better quality). If anything the quality was very poor. The pieces of tuna had large thick membranes running cross-wise though it which made it very difficult to bite. The salmon pieces weren't as bad, but it was still noticeably "chewier" than at other places that I have been to. But I will say that at least none of the fish was frozen.
We will definitely be back for more of their sushi specials, but not for our usual orders of Tuna and Salmon Dons.
I have to admit, it's risky opening a sushi place right by Sushi House, but Dai Sushi is in much larger premises, and they have clearly learned a few tricks from their neighbour in terms of pricing and quality.
The sushi was very good. Big pieces of fish, good rice quality. There were a few odd touches that seem fairly common here (like decorative tobiko on top of the hotate sushi). Toro was incredibly cheap at $1 per piece.
The miso soup is strangely thick... too much miso. But that was the only major problem for the non-sushi food. The agedashi tofu is similar to many other places around here... not really Japanese, but still tasty. The tempura was well done. I just wish more restaurants, including this one, would include some grated radish (daikon oroshi) in the tempura dipping sauce.
The service is pretty decent. Not stellar, but there wasn't anything extraordinary about this place. Probably worth it for take-out too.
OK, I was here last year, and finally gave in to go with my co-workers to this restaurant for the 2nd time. Maybe it'll taste better.. Was I wrong. I should of stayed away.
3 of us showed up for a 1:30 pm lunch weekday and figured to have a few rolls / lunch special for the day. As soon as we came in, the sushi guy seems pretty crammed into his preparation area with the server hanging around him. Ok, he's being watched. That's fine. The miso was fine, but the rolls.. I'm not sure who porportioned the water in the rice, it sure was wet tasting. Every roll we had the rolls had too much water in it's rice preparation. Couldn't eat it. the teriyaki chicken hotplate, was alright, chicken was on the well done side, so was a little chewy. almost had to eat the chicken skin to keep it moist.
The service was Ok. although the restaurant was quiet around that time, surprisingly a little more attention would of been nice. IE: would u like more tea? or any other order?. We had a buddy join us as the 4th member just to hang out but not order anything. Was there an interesting look on the lady's face when she was told he wasn't going to order anything. Sheesh.. thanks for the gesture.
It's a typical Non-japanese runned restaurant and the food reflects it. Very unfortunate as there aren't that many good japanese restaurants around.
Would I recommend my friends to come here?. Not a chance. I gave this restaurant a 2nd chance in a year and figured it has changed my impression from the last experience.. Fine, they made money off of me, but they lost my further visits..
I'm all happy now.. why?. There's a great restaurant 2 doors over that just re-opened and went from a small eat-in/ take out to a full blown restaurant. nao Sushi.. Food is fast, fresh and very nice. Service and people are great. When you surrounded my japanese patrons, you know you are in a good restaurant.. you will not regret.
Dai sushi sounds like it should....
I go to dai sushi quitely often now because i love the service here. The girl always has nice smiling and remember all the food I like. I am enjoying the place and service very much.
The sushi in this restaurant is cheap and good as well.................................................................
i dont know where you eat at, or where you have been but.
tips ARE mandatory in restraunts. Just as mandatory as you dont want chefs to spit in your food.
unless its a buffet, its common knowledge to tip 5% at lunch.
and 7-10% tip for dinner.
I just had a dinner here an hour ago and I am quite upset about their service, especially the cashier who looked like a lead waitress or a manager.
My friend and I had some sushi and rolls. After the meal I asked the cashier if we could seperate the bill. She was asking us what we had and tring to figure out the bill with an attitude. She was like annoyed of seperating the bill or something. We had to go through two tries to seperate the bill correctly. And each time she printed out the bill, she just rip the bill as soon as it came out from the machine and said "NOW YOU CHECK IF IT"S CORRECT!"
I mean what's up with the attitude toward customers? Is seperating the bill such a pain in the ass job? I used to come here quite often before but seriously, I rarely saw any waitresses here smiling and giving good service. So I know I do not expect too much from here but this is just treating the customer like sh*t.
After getting the change from her, I did not tip at ALL. Soon as I turned around the cashier said, "You have to pay tips!" So I told her I did not like the service. Then she said, "Tip is not included in the Bill" So I asked her, "Show me where in the bill that says the tip is mandatory" Then she said, "Ok!" She did not even apologize how she treated a customer with an attitude. She just demand the tip.
This Chinese owned Japanese restaurant really needs to learn about Japanese service culture before running the business. Just because the foods you are selling is somewhat like Japanese doesn't mean your service is Japanese too. Seriously, I felt like I was eating Japanese foods in some cheap Chinese restaurant where nobody give a sh*t about the customers.
This is just plain AWFUL!! I will never go back again.
There aren't many sushi places around Burnaby. This one I recently visited because it was close by and I had to try it out. It's situated at the SW corner of Kingsway and Salisbury in Burnaby, and kitty corner to the Highgate mall.
I came for lunch and ordered one of the house special Teriyaki Chicken Bento box. The tea came out piping hot which was a delight. There was quite a few customers and the seating area is more spacious and luxurious than the Sushi House place next door. Sushi House feels like a takeout restaurant which it likely is, whereas this is a dine-in restaurant.
The deep fried tempura vegetables (carrots, squash) and shrimp was average. It was a bit too greasy and wasn't flavourful for my taste. The sushi roll was on the small side. I didn't find the small salad portion added anything to the dish. It was very basic with a bit of light dressing. The best was the teriyaki chicken and rice portion. It was a bit light in flavour so I had to dress it with some soy sauce. Included as well are some pickled ginger and wasabi.
One note about the Bento box.. although it looks beautiful the way the food is arranged, it is cumbersome to eat from it. I found it is difficult to eat the rice with the chopsticks. You might have more success with a spoon to lift up the rice from the high inside edges of the box.
I would certainly try this place again. Sushi House gives you larger portions for the price, but has very little ambiance and limited seating. This place is nice to sit and dine for a casual lunch.
I frequently go here for lunch with a workmate as the food is affordable, fresh, and we have some favourite sushi rolls - the dynamite dragon in particular. When dining in a small group, ie less than 4, the service is pretty good and the sushi comes out quickly, no complaints here.
However I strongly recommend you avoid this place for large groups especially on busy days like a Friday. On a recent Friday lunch time I made a booking, we turned up with a few more than planned, and the server was very helpful in making arrangments to fit our large group, so I have no complaints on the service.
The food was another issue - with our group of 12-15 people there were about 4 items that came out quickly, the rest of the group were waiting at least a half hour for anything, and we did not get our complete order until over an hour after we had ordered. The server kept promising 5 more minutes, a few people had to leave before their food arrived, and the rest of us took ours to go. This was shocking as there were many other tables that were served and left during the time that we were waiting.
On a positive note, they did try to make up for it by delivering complimentary tempura veges/shrimp while we waited, and the server was never rude.
All in all, a good place for a couple of people, but do not come here with more than 4 diners unless you truly have all day.
I went to Dai Sushi with my girlfriend and the biggest mistake I made was that I didnt read the review for it. This place is really bad with very rude servers who dont listen. We ordered a appys which we asked earlier, however this server gets the sushi first. Then we order one of the special rolls under whose pic it says 8 pcs. The waitress gets it and it is only 5 pcs. So I ask her where are the other 3 and she says there is a mistake in the menu. It is actually 5 pcs. I was like I ordered the roll thinking it was 8 pcs as I didn't wanna fall short. This server started disputing and hurling abuses is some asian language. I will never ever go there and advise any sushi lovers to avoid this dreadful joint.
I love this place! I wouldn't say it's the best sushi I've ever had, but it is very good, especially for the price. Their wild sockeye sashimi is excellent. Their spider roll is also very good. I don't know if it's owned by Japanese people, but the chef and the girls all speak Japanese to each other. The inside is very nice, there are booths and tables. The service is very fast and the girls are very friendly and attentive.
I go to Dai about 3-4 times a week. I find the staff very friendly... I always have great food there, the price is average for sushi, but the Spicy Tuna Sashimi is always delightful! I also enjoy the Chicken Teriyaka box. The sushi comes out very quickly too which I really like because im always in a rush for no apparent reason, lol. A+
mainly because of the service i received. i had a take out order and when i got there,i had asked for some extra soy sauce, instead of charging me for it or even giving me enough in the first place the cashier said she "does not have time". hmm,i wonder sometimes if some places know the meaning of CUSTOMER SERVICE..im buying something at your restaurant, atleast give me the condiments that i am supposed to eat it with..dont have time?? wow...the food wasnt even that great...instead i would recommend sui sha ya restaurant in metrotown abbotsford or richmond..they have SUPERB service and the food is phenominal!!!anyways i would think twice before going to Dai Sushi because even the manager didnt care what i had to say.CHEERS
