Curry Express serves authentic MSG free Indian cuisine. Located in the Metrotown Centre food court.
I'll admit off the top - I dislike malls. I'm an anomaly for a woman - I have always hated shopping and I especially hate malls. Give me Commercial Drive, give me Main Street, give me Fraser Street - hell - give me the main street in downtown Cloverdale, Surrey - but malls - ugh!!
Notwithstanding my aversion to malls - sometimes I am required to be in one (my dear husband insists that he MUST get something or other at the mall and I accompany with our two children). We are inevitably hungry and need some grub. I try to convince my dear hubby to walk to Hing Loong (see my review), but he insists that we get something in the Food Court.
I will go to one place - that is Curry Express. The food is at least reasonably priced (for mall food) and the quality is okay. Sure as heck beats a lousy overpriced hot dog and sugar/water drink at Orange Julius!!
We get the special - which is two choices of curry (meat or vegetarian) on rice with naan bread and a beverage at just under $8.00 per serving. The butter chicken is okay, I usually go with the spinach and cheese - which is good.
All in all - it is a solid meal - nutritious enough and my kids will eat it.
I will not go specifically to the mall to have Curry Express - but if I am at the mall and hungry - it's the best value.
I was in murdertown watching a movie and I was so outraged by the price of movie snacks that I decided to eat after the show instead of during...Luckily the food court was nearby. This place does fast food Indian, and I have had positive experiences at their other locations. This time I had the butter chicken on rice and a couple of samosas. The BC was nothing to write home to Delhi about and was a little on the pricey side. Points off for that. The samosas were much better and a good deal at a buck a piece. They even had some complimentary chutney for my samosas. Service was okay but unremarkable, and the ambiance was pure chaos, but totally normal for the food court. I will be back next time I am in the 'hood.
Wow, what a privilege to be the first to review Curry Express.
I don't make it a habit of reviewing food court style restaurants but I must give two thumbs up for this Curry Express at Metrotown.
I have eaten there numerous times. I find the curries to be very very tasty. I usually order the Spicy Chicken Curry, it really does pack a punch as well as the Yogurt/Veggie Curry. This one has a very nice flavour, you can really taste the yogurt in this dish.
Everything is always fresh and consistent. Even the naan bread is
I must say I have eaten at Viji's, it was good, but if I am looking for a good curry , lot's of it and dirt cheap I will stop at Curry Express everytime.
Their dinner special consists of rice, naan, two types of curry and a drink for $6.99. Sorry Viji's just can't do this. As for ambiance , well, it's a food court no place to take your special date however if you do it probably will be your last.
Okay, maybe it's not hidden, but it sure gets lost in the sea of food available at the Metrotown food court. Still, the food served by this place was an amazing surprise. It tastes a great deal better than many other "nicer" Indian restaurants in the area, and the value is great. Don't overlook it in favour of one of the bigger-name chains in the mall! If you like Indian food, you won't be disappointed.
I have been here a few times and every time I come to Metrotown, I always give curry express a "try".
I would say the food is typical Fast Food indian, nothing special.
One thing I really hope they could improve is the value. the most recent 2 times I have been there, the portions have been abysmal. Last week, I ordered rice and Palak Paneer, did you know how much cheese I got for the whole order ?!! ....... 1 freaking cube of cheese, and you charge almost 6 dollars???
That's just ridiculous.
The one time before, we ordered curry and same thing there is only 3 pieces of cubed/sliced chicken in the curry.
I think Curry Express Metrotown needs to be fair with their pricing and value, if you could charge customers premium-- compare to going in an Indian restaurant, why would you serve mediocre value ??!
For these reasons, I would never go back again . I'm done giving it a "try"
The food is ok for mall food but worst of all is the portion! The take out container is some special one I have never seen before!! its narrow and fits maybe two scoops of food. You'll be lucky if there is any meat on the spoon usually its tapped off by the server!!! For the price I think a fast food combo at BK is a better value considering a plate of rice is 10 cents and the sauce you get is 20 cents.
Ordered 2 item combo for dinner.Loved the food- felt good, tasty and priced right.Woke up in the morning feeling lightheaded and lethargic and with a nasty headache. Classic case of MSG -side effects , you'll know perhaps if you have experienced it before. Unfortunately or fortunately I have a pretty good idea what was going on because I have suffered after effects of MSG before.
So...BEWARE of this takeout place if you know what MSG is and what it can do to you. And if you don't know and enjoy Asian takeouts a lot...well I guess it is too late. In that case, you will love the Curry Express food.
I am outing myself as a regular who takes out food from Curry Express at least once per week. The combo with two curries, rice, naan and a drink for under $8 is a great deal. My favourites are the veggie yogurt curry and palak paneer; the excellent mint chutney is great on both. While I have not ordered it myself I regularly see that they microwave their chicken which seems a little questionable but I should really leave that to the chicken eaters of the world to judge.
