Very tasty dishes but cheap on the rice
By Huge of Surrey (86 Reviews)

Went here with the family and ordered the 3 dishes package. The food came along with soup of the day which was some broth soup with meat. The complementary dish we chose was the deep fried fish. The 3 dishes we chose was the deep fried spicy prawns which were nice plump and spicy but lack quantity compare to other restaurants. The other dish we chose was the sweet and sour beef tenderloins and 1/2 roasted chicken. The dishes overall was very good. They came out hot and fresh. My only gripe was that you only received 3 servings of rice. We had 4 adults and 2 toddlers. If you wanted to order more plain steam rice it would have cost extra. We were used to other restaurants where there is no limit on the rice. The price overall was $45 plus tax and tip. The value was okay, would have been better if the rice was at least a bucket full. It was only 3/4 full. Probably not return as there are other restaurant with better value.

Good dim sum but avoid noodles & rice

I like this dim sum place. I find the portions are fair for the price charged. Dim sum costs can add up depending on where you eat, but it's still reasonable at this restaurant. I like that the seafood is plump, the prawns in the rice rolls are tasty. I always order the bean curd skin with three kinds of mushroom filling. Their mango pudding cut into four pieces is a nice light end to lunch. However do avoid the blah lunch special fried rice and noodle dishes. They are quite stingy with ingredients so these tend to be carb heavy. The chowmein didn't even include bean sprouts. I would recommend this place for dim sum especially as they are generous with their dim sum fillings but be careful ordering other dishes. I like the staff here, they are efficient but friendly and best of all they speak English. The clientele is a mix of Asians and non-Asians. Weekends are busy for dim sum but dim sum is served daily until 3pm. The atmosphere is typical Chinese restaurant, and a bit dated. It's a bit crowded seating so you will overhear other tables conversations. However despite this it's still a cheerful congenial atmosphere.

Good food, excellent prices, and very friendly staff

This restaurant is very close to my house so we end up there for weekend brunch quite often. It is a fairly typical chinese restaurant with several large tables for groups. This is the kind of place with plastic, not linen on the tables. Live fish tanks along the back wall let you watch crabs duke it out while they await their eventual doom.

Don't let that turn you off though. The owners are very friendly and work hard to make sure you're having a good time. They're very family-friendly and I see kids in there all the time.

You have to order off the menu which is fine for us. If you want the full HK experience complete with carts and shrieking hostesses Po King is there for you.

The food is good. You have to watch out for MSG though if you don't like it, or are sensitive like my sister. They're pretty good about pointing out which dishes have it in it already, and will leave it out of anything else on request.

Chong Lum Hin offers a more laid back experience at a very good price. They also have great extended hours for takeout and delivery. Coupled with the really good food, the price and friendly service make this place a solid 4 for me.

Okay dim sum

I came here last week with my 5 year old son and 2 year old daughter. I had been here about 4 years ago and remember it being a pretty decent dim sum experience.

Like the previous reviewers have stated, this place is not fancy, more functional than anything else and appeared to be clean. The waitresses were pretty fluent in English (even though I do speak Cantonese), I chose to speak and order in English. Service was decent, they brought me tea (didn't ask me what type of tea, I guess they only have one type there) and water when I asked for it. Plates and dim sum steamers were removed promptly when food was finished.

You have to order the dim sum from an order sheet, no push cart service here, so you have to wait a bit for your food to come. If you're starving like we were, you will just have to wait. I think that this makes people order more than they actually need, which happened in my case.

They had the usual stuff like other places. I ordered siu mai, chicken feet, shrimp rice roll, steamed bbq pork buns, omasum, sticky rice and a plate of sliced beef and jellyfish. Everything tasted the way it supposed to taste, I wasn't blown away by anything. The beef that came with the jellyfish was pretty tought and chewy, not very good. The jellyfish was cut into really broad strips and didn't really have a lot a flavour. Overall, the food was decent.

As for value, most items are in the $2.75 - $3.00 range, which is okay. You usually expect the order type of dim sum places to have a slightly cheaper price per dish than cart style places, probably because they only steam the amount of dishes that you order, rather make a whole bunch of dishes and have the cart ladies try to go around and around with items that no one really wants...less waste I guess. However, this wasn't the case with Chong Lum. The jellyfish dish was around $5.50 and definitely not worth it. The bill came to about $27 before tip. I probably could have gotten away with ordering about 2 less dishes though. One good thing is that it didn't look like they charge for tea, usually about 70 - 80 cents per person at other places.

I probably wouldn't come here again, cause you can get much better dim sum at Po King on Kinsgsway, for around the same price.

Good neighbourhood dim sum restaurant

This was my first time trying out this place since they've changed ownership. All that time, I've been travelling to Vancouver and Richmond for dim sum. We came here cuz my hubby didn't want to drive across town for lunch, and we are literally 2 mins. drive to Chong Lum Hin from home. Plus, he really enjoyed their dim sum last time and they made him and his brother and sister-in-law feel welcome (they're caucasion). I hesitate cuz of their lousy service and mediocore food before they changed owner.
Boy, was I wrong! It was a nice surprise to find out how good their dim sum was. I especially like their dessert, their chilled wolfberry gelatin. I practically wolf the whole dessert down after being stuffed.
With the rising cost of gas, I will definitely come back for my dim sum fix. Its not a fancy restaurant, just a casual family restaurant, and its clean. Next time, I'll try out their dinner.
If you live in Burnaby or New West area, no need to drive far. This is a good place to go for dim sum.

New management not always better

Bring back the old Chong Lim Hin. This new dim sum menu is too difficult to order from. The verbiage used to describe menu items is to flowery and tends to confuse. Same waitress as before management change, extremely capable but still overworked. I noticed a big jump in prices. Better places to patronize. Don't see myself returning.

Not great for the price

I have been wanting to try out this restaurant since I saw their Grand Opening signs and saw the write-up in the local newspaper. So tonight I went with some Chinese friends and we decided to try the Chinese Special dinner for 6 people, for $98.00. There were a total of 6 dishes, including one appetizer, one soup and then four other dishes. The appetizer was tiny, with a few slices of pork hock, a few very thin slices of some beef and a large pile of jelly fish. The soup was decent size, but had little flavour. The next dish was the whole lobster on a bed of noodles and Chinese greens. The lobster did not come with anything to crack the legs open and none of them were opened far enough to be able to get the meat out. Then a dish was served with vegetables and seafood and another one with green peas and fish (which was supposedly sole). Then a plate of cold chicken, chopped up. The last thing was the "dessert" and I have to say that I think I would have preferred a Fortune cookie, than the bowl of sweetened beans in sauce. All in all, not the greatest of meals, especially considering the price. I have had much better food at a restaurant down the street, for a lot less. I will not be back for dinner again, but I will try the Dim Sum one morning though to see how that compares with other places I have tried.

Great Dim Sum!

Went last Sunday for Dim sum with friends. I was impressed with the portions and the taste! Easy to follow menu and friendly staff.
The food was great, the dim sum menu has a lot of dim sum standards (I've been to quite a few dim sum places) and some I'd never seen before and tried.
I have no complaints about this place. The prices were more than fair, my 4 friends and I ate like kings for less than 60 bucks with tip.
Will be going again!!

I've reviewed this restaurant 3 times (2006, 7 and 8) before this, and am upgrading my ratings in 2009 from 3-3-3-3 to 4-4-4-3. I'm stingy in my ratings as I seldom find places that are 4's and 5's (I know we need to try more places). But based on the fact that we continue to come for Dim Sum 2-3 times/month and for dinner about 3-6 times a year and reflecting on the past 3+ years of dining here, I'm increasing my Food, Service & Value Ratings to 4-Outstanding. Ambiance continues to be 3 as the establishment is clean and functional, but it's not a fancy restaurant. Sometime ago, they added another room that used to be a small store next door to increase their capacity, and their parking lot behind holds quite a few cars (full during busy times of course).

Foodwise, Dim Sum dishes are of good size and everything we've tried has been tasty. We love their Pot Stickers, Singapore noodles (my kid's fave), Pork Har Gow, Steamed Bean Curd with 3 kinds of Mushroom, Eggplant with Shrimp, Chicken/Vegetable Chow Mein, and many more dishes.. Dinners (we usually bring family for birthdays or the odd holiday eat-out) have been terrific. Everything we've ordered has been generously portioned and like Dim Sum, tasty and filling. We like to order Crispy Chicken, Shredded Chicken & Jellyfish, Szechuan Green Beans, Hot Pots, Sweet & Sour Boneless Port (kids fave), Breaded Fish with Mayo-type sauce, Ma Pow Tofu, Various steam fish dishes, and many more...

One thing we need to do is to stop ordering too much. But then we wouldn't have left overs to enjoy.

good dim sum for great value

My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for a long time, and the recent switch of ownership has only made it better. The dim sum has rose in price by 25 cents, making it $2.25 for most dishes, but with the rising inflation, etc. you just can't complain. This restaurant is usually understaffed for the amount of patrons that frequent it, but the staff that are there work hard. The dishes are larger portions than other dim sum places I've gone to, so as a bargain hunter this place is my #1 pick for dim sum in the lower mainland.

Cheapest Chinese Dim Sum in town

Submitted Sunday, November 13, 2005 - 5:15pm [Dine in]

A friend of mine recommended this restaurant to me and told me it was the best dim sum deal in town. Never having been to this restaurant before, the restaurant is on the border between Burnaby and New Westminster. My family of 5 arrived at the restaurant on a Friday morning around 11:00 am. It's just a hole in the wall, and not a very fancy building, but inside it was just like any other Chanadian restaurant. Every dim sum was priced at $2.00 per plate with over 40 selections to choose from. Your common dim sum like shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, and BBQ Pork buns, but also specialty dim sum like taro root cakes, chicken feet, and curried squid. We ate till we could no longer eat. Party of 5, 2 adults and 3 kids, the bill came to $40.00 including tip. Awesome deal for dim sum. Enjoy.

I went for dim sum at this place for the 1st time. Looking at the menu the prices seemed very reasonable that is until the food came. You get very small portions for the price. Most of the dishes we ordered were $2.75. I would rather spend my money on a better dim sum place with bigger portions for that amount of money. The congee was good and that's about it. Will not be returning again.

recommended by a friend, we tried their dim sum. we found
the flavour & quality to be lacking - we're fussy and can taste when
ingredients are not optimum fresh, as was the case here.

disappointed with food, even though service was great. only one other table was occupied, in addition to ours.
