New Mexican Eatery in the Heights
I was really sad to see La Salza go, but equally glad to see another Mexican restaurant replacing it. Vancouver really does lack good Mexican eateries.
Upon entering BDR, you would think "restaurant", however, it is very casual and almost fast food. They just opened, so you can see that they are still working out some kinks:
-eating area is very cold with just a thermal stand heater in the center
-no real cashier station, just a cart table with utensils and a cash register
-currently it's just cash only, but it seems as though they will soon be getting debit/credit?
-Meals are served on styrofoam plates
In spite of these kinks, BDR has much potential. They offer really quick meals and a very afforable price. Nothing on their simple, but satisfying menu is over $8. My tamale platter was only $5.95 and came with a nice sized chicken tamale, rice, beans, salad, and (good) salsa.
As any good family run business, their service is very friendly. Sylvia asked me for my name after telling me she remembered me from the last time I visited.
Another really good thing I noticed (that is sadly lacking in a lot of eateries these days) is that she washes her hands EVERYTIME after handling cash or food.
Although it's not a restaurant type place, I would definitely recommend BDR for friendly service and quick, but good eats.
Had dinner here tonight, and was more impressive than it looked from the outside. Decor here is pretty sparse, but clean. There were a few tables and a cart which held the cash register, sauces, napkins and plastic utensils.
First thing I noticed was the service was excellent. The waitress was extremely friendly and explained their specials and what type of food they were serving. Was asked if everything was okay when enjoying the meal, as well as when paying.
This restaurant is new, and it seems like they are trying to impress. They certainly impressed me with their service!
The food I wanted to like, because of the great service. I ordered a burrito, tacos and a tamale plate. They were good, very fresh tasting. It tasted good and fresh, but nothing really wowed me. I gave the food 3 stars since nothing was bad, and it tasted pretty good, but nothing was outstanding that would pull me in to come again.
Would return if in the area, but doubt if I would make a special trip to go there. Great service, hope they do well.
