Go for the BBQ!
By Quality_First of Vancouver (11 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, June 28, 2007 - 6:33pm [Dine in]

After reading the conflicting reviews below, I had to find out for myself what the deal was. How can two separate experiences be so different? One reviewer saying that it was one of the top BBQ places in town and the other saying not to go for the BBQ at all. I tend to go with reviewers that have multiple reviews on this site as opposed to a reviewer with only 1 or 2 reviews (seems biased to me that way). Hmmm ... I was off to find out for myself.

With my friends in tow, we decided to hit this restaurant up to test their BBQ. They have an "ETC sampler" for 2 ppl which lets you try all the house meats - chicken wings, BBQ chicken, brisket, pulled pork, ribs and Italian sausage. Because there were 4 of us, we went for the "MENU sampler", which is the same thing, but serves 3 -4 ppl.

VERDICT: Go for the BBQ !! Holy smokes, you get a lot of food - and it's good food. It's not covered up with a whole bunch of BBQ sauce - you actually get to taste the flavor of the smoked meat. The server was really friendly and told us that yes, they indeed have a smoker that they smoke their meat in. You can tell - it was all very delicious.

I'd definitely take my mom here.

I read the menu first before writing my review ...

I just discovered this site and what a wealth of information it is. Although after reading all the reviews, I must agree with some other fellow reviewers that some people do expect a bit much out of restaurants and with one bad experience, will write a review that (and I'm quoting here ..) "WOULD SEEM AIM AT DESTROYING SOMEONE'S BUSINESS". This is the very reason that I write this review today.

Burgers Etc. is in my neighbourhood and I frequent it all the time (as do many people ... as I am now finding out during my short waits for a table during the lunch rush). What I find disturbing about Tony3's review below is that if he had indeed READ the menu, it specifically states that they use ground chuck steak for their burgers and they serve their burgers MEDIUM WELL (this is stated in RED so that people see it) - so yes, the burger would indeed be pink when served to you. If you want it well done, just ask the server to have the kitchen make it so. Telling people that your burger was undercooked (when in fact it was served the way it was suppose to be served) is terrible ... and could possibly destroy the proprietor's business if one didn't know the facts.

So I am here to redeem one of my favorite restaurants, because I want them around for a long time! Their burgers are great ... and I have also discovered their spicy chicken burgers (so juicy!) and the beef dip sandwiches (the smoked meat is amazing). I'm going to have to stop by for dinner one time and try one their BBQ platters - sample it all in one shot!

Stick To The Burgers, Not The Etc.

As one of my requirements for writing a review at DineHere.ca is to frequent the establishment at least twice, Buddy and I stopped in a few times in the last month to see what all the hype was about. Starting with the burgers, seeing as it's in the restaurants name, they come served with your choice of side, which include, corn niblets, coleslaw, potato salad or baked beans. Although my mushroom/mozza (two dollars extra) burger was tasty, scouring the menu I was shocked to see a $1.50 substitute charge for fries. Now I know the potato harvests yield was dwindling this year, but charging an extra $1.50 for fries is enough to send my Irish cousin fleeing back to his motherland. As forementioned in the reviews title, lets get to the real reason behind this somewhat negative review, the Etc. sampler platter for two. At the same price (39.95) as a similar platter at Memphis Blues, we were expecting to stuff our faces full this particular afternoon, but the portions paled in comparison to what you'd get elsewhere. Razor thin slices of roast beef passed off as brisket, a few jumbo wieners trying to imitate Italian sausages, only two ribs, and BBQ chicken that was as dry as the mojave. The pulled pork and spicy chicken wings were just ok. Only a few dabs of BBQ sauce here and there and no hot sauce or toothpicks(a must with pulled pork) at tableside. Our choice of three sides included a watery bowl of cold corn niblets, tasteless coleslaw(cabbage with a squirt of dressing) and some mushy "baked" brown beans I swear were out of a can. Libby's anyone? Stick to the burgers at Burgers Ect. unless you want to get ripped off and leave hungry, in which you'd order the Etc. sampler platter.

We'll Be Back!

A few weeks ago a friend and I tried out Burgers Etc. to see if we wanted to have our monthly lunch there with a larger group. We loved the food and the owner came and talked to us for quite a while about the history of the restaurant. We liked the place.
Today twelve of us went for lunch. We got there at 11:30 because there are no reservations and the place fills up very quickly with working people on their lunch hours. The service was excellent, our food came out all at the same time, and everyone really enjoyed their meals. We had a variety of items on the menu; chuck steak burgers, hamburgers, bbq chicken burgers, BLT, potato salad, coleslaw, beans and soup. I make many different soups at home and have never made, or had anywhere else, ANYTHING like the mushroom soup I ate today. It was beyond excellent!
Once things calmed down a bit, Calvin came over and sat with us for a few minutes and just chatted.
It's a very welcoming place where you can feel right at home. Excellent value! I will certainly go there again.
Thank-you!

Burgers... House Fries... and a Great view of the Game be it football (european), or hockey

here's the skinny

their beef burgers consists of high grade chuck steak, thats how they justify the price

their pulled pork is marinated VERY well and the flavour is mindblowing

their Frenchfries are thick cut Steak House fries

Their Special Dish that i have not seen anywhere is their signature "house fries" which is essentially Chilli fries, with their take on gravy
--> at about 6-7$ for this side dish... it better deliver...and it does... very well its amazingly good.

overall, their food is very good. However, the prices are the deal breaker. yes its good, but for the same price, i'd rather go to another burger joint like Bronco Belle in Brentwood Mall's Food Court and have a wild [meat] burger.

They marinate the meat very well and if they claim that the meat was of higher grade then maybe it justifies the cost however, its still ridiculous to get a normal burger with no sides for around 8.50 + tax

Best Burgers in town

I've been to Burgers Etc. twice now and remain impressed. The burgers have a lively flavour as they are not cremated (unlike most other burger joints...i.e. Vera's) The side dishes are delicious and the staff have always been pleasant and efficient. The place is a bit of a hole in the wall but is a great find. Highest recommendation.

So good I had TWO!
By lazyhusband of Burnaby (31 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, May 4, 2006 - 11:10pm [Dine in]

Finally got the chance to try this place out tonight and it did not disappoint. I ordered the large bbq beef brisket sandwich and baked beans. The sandwich comes with sauteed mushrooms and onions mixed with their homemade bbq sauce. The bun is super soft and one bite into it, I was in heaven. This sandwich basically reminded me of the first time I bit into a Krispy Kreme doughnut. The meat is so tender and the bun is so soft that by the time you finish eating it, you don't even notice it one bit in your stomach. I could literally eat 4 or 5 of these in one sitting. The beans were good too. You can tell they were homemade and not Heinz.

After the sandwich, I had a dilemma. I was still hungry and wanting more. I decided to go with the charbroiled 6 oz burger over the pulled pork sandwich. I added sauteed onions to my burger and had the potato salad as my side. The potato salad was solid but not amazing but the burger was excellent. It is made with ground chuck steak and packed with lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, mayo, ketchup and a deli style pickle. The presentation was excellent also. Burger was sitting neatly on the plate and it looked good enough to photograph for a burger poster. It is not as messy as a Vera burger when you attempt to eat it, which is a good thing!

All in all, a must try place. Only complaint...the side dishes are a little small. I will definitely be back to try the pulled pork sandwich and will make this my regular stop when I am craving for a burger or a sandwich. Also, they have two tvs up on the wall so it's a great place to catch a hockey game and hang out with friends.

I tried a basic burger combo ($9.50 or so) wich comes with a choice of a soup, fries, or a salad. The meat was good, but needed a tad more salting. I wish the basic burger had a cheese as a default.
Spinach soup was not what I reccomend.
It's something that your mom makes what's left in the fridge; good for ya, but not something you crave for.
Overall, I was satisfied, but not impressed.
I would like to try their BBQ next time.

I have heard so much about their burger, I decided to order one for myself. It's a pretty good burger, but I don't really think it's that great. In fact, I still enjoy White Spot's Legendary the best. But that being said, I'm still very glad that an individual small business is doing well in my neighborhood...Great job, guys~

I have been passing this place for the last few months and finally had the chance to get in for some BBQ. The staff was friendly and very welcoming as we entered. Reminds me a little of some of the BBQ places I recently visited in the South. I had pulled pork which was out of this world and brisket which was good but in my opinion could have been tenderer. They mix their brisket with onions and mushrooms which isn't to my liking. I would prefer thicker cut brisket with the option to add toppings like raw onions and jalapenos. The setting is casual but comfortable and I am sure could be a lot of fun with a group of friends. Generally I found this place enjoyable and will go back and try something else next time. Obviously I need to try one of their Burgers.

Favorite new BBQ place!

I've been looking for a great BBQ place with messy ribs and delicious sides and I've found it!

3 of us went on a Saturday night and we quickly were seated and started drooling over the dishes coming out of the kitchen (right in the dining area). I had the ribs and pulled pork combo with beans and coleslaw - a decent amount for $16. The ribs were delicious, very little fat and plenty of meat! The pulled pork was heavenly, a big pile that was enough for leftovers. The coleslaw was so good, I ate mine and one of my tablemate's. A very satisfying BBQ meal - one that I look forward to again! We all agreed that this was a good find.

The dining room makes effort at 'Southern style' but it is small and a little drafty. The service was great, food came quickly and I'd love to try the brisket next time. I'm craving it already!

I've been here about a dozen times.

The soups in winter are fantastic - they always sell out by dinner so go for lunch.

Their meats and burgers are great. The pulled pork and beef brisket is amazing... unbeatable. BBQ chicken is good as well, but I don't really like their italian sausage that much. It's a bit dry for me. Good milkshakes!

Decor is fine, service is good. Value is probably better than average if you get one of the shared dishes.

Love it.

Craving BBQ, so headed out with DadaMao and LittleMao in tow. Restaurant was about half full, but it was really warm inside, even with three fans going. Promptly seated but with no menus. Hmm. That should have been a hint. Asked a passing waitress for a menu but to no avail. Ended up getting one from a cook, as the grill - cooking area is right behind the serving area. Prices were higher than we expected but we decided on the 2 combo (I chose beef brisket and ribs with fries / corn as a side.. gotta feed LittleMao) and DadaMao had a pulled pork sandwich and a ginger ale. When the waitress came back with the ginger ale - it was a unopened can that looked as if it had been in a dusty stock room for a long long time.. lucky she brought a straw. Food arrived - again portions were smaller than we expected, for the price, but the BBQ was good. Defintely good. But the service was beyond belief and not in a good way. We asked for our bill, three times. Not sure why it took so long, since restaurant wasnt busy. We paid with a large bill, much larger than the dinner cost.. anyway, we got the wrong change back.. and when we told the waitress, she told us that she had to count her till to ensure that we werent scamming her. My reply was "what did you think we gave you?" She replied, a 20, which wouldnt have made sense as our meal was more than amount. I guess she realized that it made her look a little dim.. she mumbled something about giving our change to the table beside us (who had already left by then) and came back, eventually, with the correct change. I mentioned this to the manager and she just commented that everyone makes a mistake once in a while and to cut her some slack. The poor customer service made me shake my head, so consider take out instead!

Stopped in for lunch

I stopped into Burgers Etc. BBQ House yesterday as I had seen it listed as a one of the top lunch spots in the city. I went with the Pulled Pork sandwich and wasn't disappointed. It contained a huge portion of pulled pork, was slathered in BBQ sauce, and the with the coleslaw on top of the pork made a great Southern style BBQ sandwich. I'll definitely go back to try their hamburgers (which seems to be what they are renowed for and were doing a brisk business in!) and may return for dinner some time to try some of the BBQ platters. Burgers Etc BBQ House is certainly worth checking out and its good to know that it is a solid BBQ option in the city. My drawback was that I found it someone cold in the restaurant itsself. Granted it was low single digits outside yesterday, but they could have cranked the heat to make it more comfortable inside.

Nice, cosy little restaurant; friendly staff; quick service. Not fast food.
The bun was a little boring. Meat was good. They didnt have avocados (which I like !). Price: just over $12 - Maybe a little high for this burger. Potato salad was boring.

Verdict: 7.5/10; Would probably go back.

Wow, tried the spicy chicken burger here with mushrooms and it was outstanding if messy. Flavourful, saucy, spicy & filled with mushrooms. I was stuffed the portions seemed ample to me, I had fries as the side. We were there at lunchtime and even though it was pretty busy our food got to us pretty promptly.

i was dying to try this place after hearing fab. reviews. i finally went and got take out. i ordered 2 burgers, one charboiled beef burger with cheese, the other ~ a chicken burger with mushroom. and cheese. one with side order of fries , the other with coleslaw.

no denying that both burgers tasted great. but i was disappointed with the meal because the mushroom was lacking. the coleslaw was tasteless, and the fries ~ not a lot as some ppl claimed, and they were similar, if not the same as whitespot's. they must buy from the same supplier. overall, i thought $ 20.00 for 2 burgers was expensive.

i don't regret trying this place, but i won't be back. i'll stick with whitespot ~ i miss the triple 0 sauce. that's just me though.

We finally had a chance to try out Burgers-Etc. Of course we did not get a burger this time round. Rainbowcrab had the smothered fries with pulled pork. She loved it! Raved about the pork, the bbq sauce and the fries. The sauce is sweeter tomato based kind with a good kick.
I had the combo which was on sale for only 13.99$ It came with 2 meats of my choice, fries and coleslaw.
I chose ribs and beef brisket. They were both very good. Tender, good flavour. I like my brisket a bit thicker cut, but still very good. I would go back again for sure.
One draw back of this place, rainbow crab says the woman's washroom is horrid. The door does not create any privacy, as it has a wide gab and does not go below your knees as you sit... HUM...

anyone looking for a great burger for lunch or bbq for dinner this is the place. The ribs, chicken wings, sausage and pretty much everything are fantastic. My favorite are the fries with chipolte mayo and I do go 3-4 times a week to get some as I live three blocks away. I've gotten to know the owner and staff and they are all wonderful and make you feel at home. I would highly recommend this place either to dine in or take out. you will not be disappointed. The value is great as well. They do not skimp on portion sizes. Enjoy!

I tried to Burger Etc last week since there were so many positive reviews. It was a small burger restaurant that would give you a warm feeling.
The pulled pork was really good and the fries were OK. The server also told me that the burger was good as well. The only thing was the price was expensive than many other burger restaurant but it's still one of my places to eat burger.
