We thought we'd try this place out so we went there one Friday night. The young lady who seated us seemed like she was doing us a big favour. She appeared very rude although I'm sure she didn't mean to.
Our server was totally disengaged and did not appear to enjoy what he was doing at all. After placing our order, we noticed that other tables, including the one right beside us, were given a complimentary dish to start on while they wait for their food. Our server did not extend the same courtesy to us. We waited a very long time for our meal. The food was good but not spectacular. I've had much better Indian food in this city.
The service was horrible. Not once did our server check up on us. We needed more naan but the server never came so we managed without. He did not even check if our water needed to be refilled. The other servers seemed much more attentive, checking up on their tables and being friendly to the customers. When he brought the bill, I mentioned to our server that the food was good but I was very disappointed in the service, or lack thereof. He apologized and started making excuses by saying on Friday and Saturday nights they're very busy (the small restaurant was only half full and I counted at least four servers), if I came on a less busy night, I'd get better service. He also said they've advertised for more servers but no one is applying. I personally don't care if it's a busy night or if they have staffing issues, the service wasn't just slow it was unacceptable as our server was so disengaged. I would not return here again.
Came here today for lunch with my wife. Walked in and didn't see anybody, waited at the front for a few minutes. Finally someone appears and we were told we can seat ourselves. We had the buffet, there was very little butter chicken (our favorite) but we took what was left. The food was ok, average to me. I've had worse and I've had better so I rate it somewhere in the middle. I don't think I would return because I ate at a different indian restaurant in Burnaby and I prefer that one over this one so next time I feel like butter chicken I would rather go there.
My family and I have come to this restaurant a couple of times each year before and after it changed ownership. We did not notice a change in food quality with the change of owners. We love the curries, vegetarian meals and naan. We also tried the pakoras last time and they were very yummy.
One waitress who is not Indian is excellent, knowledgeable and friendly. We had a young waitress the last time we ate there and she was fine but a bit quiet.
I love how quiet and peaceful the restaurant is especially in comparison to the packed Anton's next door.
I will definitely come back to this place for quality Indian food.
After the last few reviews I had some apprehension about going there with some people from work. I'm glad I let myself be persuaded to try, because the food is really good! We had the lunch buffet - for $9.95 plus tax there were four meat dishes ( 3 chicken, 1 lamb) plus several vegetarian, salad, dessert and fruit. We had to ask for the naan but it came to the table fresh and hot, and was included in the buffet price. The chicken tikka masala was very good! The ambience is ok; more like a cafeteria than a cosy restaurant, but who cares, the food was good and the price was right.
Bombay Bhel is Bombay Beat now. I'm still going there once a week for lunch. As for the recent negative reviews, I'm not surprised. Bombay Bhel was sold and the former management and staff were all gone by the end of March - very disappointing to many I'm sure as Ron and his crew were amazing. The new owners have a very high mark to reach. Weekly lunches post-sale were disappointing in ALL areas, but the food seems to have improved even if the service hasn't. Apparently the menu is meant to go under drastic reconstruction at the end of June because it is property of Bombay Bhel, the former parent company with 4 locations in Ontario. All we can do is wait and see. They haven't replaced any of the art on the walls which adds to the echo in the cavernous space. They did put in a TV though, which personally I abhor - eatertainment be damned, this is a restaurant not a sports bar! And if you guys are reading this, the tables for 2 are not large enough for anything but Thali, so please let me sit at a double table so I can spread out my a la carte lunch - the naan basket takes up most of the table by itself.
Hopelessly inept and amatuer service combined with substandard "Indian" fare made this my first and last visit to Bombay Bhel. The high decibel level in the back area of the cavern-like resteraunt made dining here feel almost like a food court in busy mall though there were only a few tables occupied. The food wasnt a whole lot better than one might receive in a food court either. The 5 of us were seated in a timely fashion but it took our young, befuddled server more than 10 minutes to get menus to us. He was slow to get us water, forgot an order of coffee then brought a pot of tepid tea with one mug though two of us ordered tea. It became somewhat comical as he floundered from kitchen to his two tables then back again, a bewildered look on his visage. We ordered an appetizer platter with samosas and pakoras that was instantly forgettable. It took more than 25 minutes to arrive at our table. All the items on the plate were luke warm. Service picked up slightly as he noted my furrowed brow (lol) and soon after our main course of a mixed tandoori platter, rice and naan with an additional dish of butter chicken was set before us. The food was at best barely passable. They can't seem to get food to the customer hot. The tandoori platter consisted of chicken, fish and lamb. Nothing here to make anyone elicit much comment to the good or bad. Tired is a term that springs to mind. Fussier, more demanding customers would certainly have complained by this point. But it was Mother's Day and we're a pretty easy going bunch. Has to be said though- Given the plethora of fine Indian resteraunts in Vancouver this level of cooking just doesnt cut the chutney. The best item of the entire lunch was the naan. reasonably well. But Bomaby Bhel is not worthy of a return visit and I cant recommend it.
It used to be one of my family's favorite restaurants. Relaxing atmosphere, good food and friendly stuff. I haven't been there for a couple of months and what a change!
It looks like a cheap buffet, my kebab tasted like a peace of wood. What do you have to put in there to make it so bad? Their bread and drinks are still good but I will never go there again :(
Checked out the buffet a few weeks back they had a nice selection to try out. I am not a expert in Indian food but I enjoyed it it was not overly spicey and there was a veggi ball that was very tasty. Service was quick and plated were taken away fast. I got my monies wth in volume of food thats for sure.
This was the second time I visited this place. Both times with an Entertainment Book Coupon, but I wouldn't hesitate to go without a coupon.
The decor was nice and they greeted us with warm smiles at the entrance and sat us immediately.
I had the Chicken Vindaloo, and my wife had the Lamb Karahi - both are curry dishes. They come with either rice or naan, so we ordered one of each for the both of us to share. We also had the raita, which came in very handy to calm the heat - we ordered our dishes medium, which was perfect for us.
I loved it so much, my stomach was hurting - I should have brought some home !!
Our server was very friendly and helpful and I would go back any time.
