Bentei Sushi offers a classic menu of Japanese cuisine for lunch and dinner.
I remember going here a few times a few years ago and it was great!
Went the other day with people from work. The food has gone way downhill and the prices way up.
The sushi was kinda fishy but ok. However it rang in at close over 10 for a dynamite roll and cali roll with a small tip. That's too much. No value, no lunch special boxes and everything else seemed quite expinsive. Not a cheap sushi place anymore. However, it still has the dumpy cheap sushi bar decor.
I was expecting this place to be better, after reading the reviews and seeing that it was doing brisk business when we went there. The food was ready quickly, and the service was friendly and efficient, but the food was not impressive. We had 4 long fish bones in our BC roll...definitely a big minus! The restaurant itself looked a an old cafeteria, but was clean.
I had been a frequent visitor to this sushi place for 10 years....it used to be so busy with "Incredible" food and service. In the past year everything has slowiy declined. The prices keep going up and up and the quality and size of the rolls are going down...I stopped going for awhile, but recently decided to give it one more try. I called in for take out and ordered the dynamite roll. ..upon eating the roll I realized the"hot cooked" temura prawn was cold and raw. I called to speak to the owner. He told me that he cooked the prawn at 10:00 am (this was now 1 pm). Instead of apologizing and offering any help he only made excuses. He said other people like it that way and if I wasn't happy "too bad" and proceeded to hung up on me. I was appaulled at his response. It was the worst customer service I have ever encountered.....Bentei Sushi has lost myself (and many more of my co-workers) as customers forever......now you are aware too !!!
I heard from my friend that this restaurent is 18 yrs old, has traditional Japanese style dishes.
I went there by myself, all the staffs were greeting warmly and explained the menues including special rolls that are not on the menu to make me understand easily.
I tried several special rolls, Rainbow Roll, Victoria Roll, Dragon Roll and Hot Night Roll.
The fishes' freshness is outstanding as well as the roll itself ! I always try the basic california roll to taste a sushi restaurant to see how their basic roll tastes, and Bentei sushi's california roll is one of the best that I've ever tasted. I even tasted cali roll from California but it can't beat Bentei's.
Their special rolls are incredibly cheap but quality is the best. Like other place's Green dragon roll is like 13 dollars or above due to the price of Unagi (fresh eel) but their's are under 10 bucks!!
They try to find the perfect roll by listening to the customers (like what I like and dont like) / recommand the specials and it touched my heart.
I will definitely go there again. It is small but cozy place to stop for cheap food.
I love Bentei sushi!
I went to the Bentei Sushi with my friends.
And all i can say is wow. The food was good, service was good, and the mood was nice. My friends and i had chicken and beef bentos, sashimi, yakisoba and other appetizers too. I think Bentei bentos are the best bentos i have ever had. The sashimi was pretty fresh and also the edammame and tempuras too. It was very crispy:) even though the restaurant was small, still it was clean and the mood was like family and the service from the boss was very friendly and polite. My friends love this place too and we decided to come back next time!:) Thanks Bentei!!
tried the spicy sockeye salmon roll, miso soup and green salad. everything satisfied me but the salmon did not taste too too fresh. also the roll was really pretty sloppy! i remember the miso soup as average but not bad. the salad was pretty tasty for the price, although to others it might be average as i dont eat those salads often.
the service was very polite (mom and pop, japanese-canadian) and although my tea seemed to run out often they were often around for me to call over. the hot tea was good. the place was kind of busy. (might have been a weekend) they had those gelati menus on the table for desserts. i would consider returning for a family meal as this place is very close to me and was comfortable. hopefully the salmon will taste fresher next time, but i cant quite rate a sushi restaurant 'solid' for food without fresh fish or neat sushi!
We did not walk into Bentei Sushi with high hopes. In fact, we were just hungry. I don't have a lot to say about the food in general, as it was decent. Just decent: the tempura had excessive batter on it but other than that the chicken teriyaki is good, the rice is good, the miso soup is good (not too salty), etc. I ordered the Special Combo Teishoku. It was a bit too overpriced, I found (10.25) but filling. (I couldn't finish it all so I brought it home.
What I would like to especially talk more about is the ambiance. "Hole in the wall" is an appropriate description. The space lacks decorating (there are attempts) and color coordination. The lighting could do better. We were actually sort of hesitant to go in in the first place because of its not very pleasant atmosphere.
Don't be too intimidated by the lack of professional touch to the space and restaurant itself. The hostess is kind and the food is edible.
This is a decent place for good Japanese food. Their sushi is very good. We always like to order their combination special which comes with sunomono, miso soup, chicken or beef teriyaki, california roll and mixed tempura with a good side of rice. They have other combinations as well. All for around $10.00.
We used to frequent the other Bentei Sushi on Renfrew Street before as well but it recently changed ownership, even though it's still called Bentei Sushi. It has a totally different menu and a bit more expensive. I personally prefer the one on East Broadway (original owner) myself.
This place makes the best dynamite roll I've ever had. Cheap and Good Sushi. Friendly service also. Better to get here before or after the dinner and lunch rush, many people come for take out and to eat in. Yum!
you usually think that restaurants that use their take-out containers when eating-in are suspect, but bentei has always been reliable eats. either a negitoro don or a spicy tuna don with an order of chicken karaage always hits the spot.
I used to frequent Bentei Sushi a few years ago, and when I'm in the area I don't pass by without picking up a small order to-go.
The staff are friendly and courteous, that's a "bonus" in the food business. The prices compare with other sushi restaurants in the Burnaby area.
I've always enjoyed the food, the Ikura (Salmon Roe) are bubbling with taste, the Dynamite Rolls are proportionally sized, the Tuna melts in your mouth.
Have eaten here several times and food is always fresh and affordable. Enjoy their bentei dinner boxes with a mix of teriyaki beef or chicken, salad with nice dressing, noodles, and also their sushi roll combos. The staff are friendly and greet you readily. Restaurant is always full of patrons as they have a brisk takeout business too.
Okay so this place is a bit of a hole in the wall but it's awesome. They have really good food at a good price and it's actually Japanese people making the food! It's a family run restaurant and you can tell by their food quality. There is another Bentei Sushi in Vancouver but it's recently changed ownership and is not as good. I would definitely recommend this place for cheap food and good eats!
