not worth the wait in line
By serika of Surrey (5 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, December 21, 2009 - 5:57am [Dine in]

After receiving recommendations from a couple friends, bf and I decide to check it out. Got there at 5 on a Sunday night and there was already a line. The waiting area inside the place is pretty small, so most people waiting for a table stand outside. I didn't keep track of how long we were waiting but it was at least 10-20 minutes.

First impression: kind of cramped, so not a lot of walking room.. I guess that's to maximize number of tables. Server was a nice, earnest guy who checked up on us during the meal and kept the water filled up without being asked. We ordered the calamari with marinara. Calamari is not breaded or coated with anything (not saying it's bad, just not what we expected) and the tomato sauce was pretty good (tangy and a little spicy). Bf is a big calamari fan and liked it.

Entrees: conchiglione and manicotti Anton's (both are baked dishes). I was disappointed in my pasta because all I could taste from my manicotti was tomato sauce, the cheese that covered it, and the manicotti itself (but not the chicken and spinach filling). For the conchiglione, I detected some kind of seafoody taste but nothing distinct. Basically both dishes were edible but not particularly tasty.

Bill came out to a little more than $40. All I could think was that for an extra $10 I could have had an amazing dinner at my favourite Italian place a little further down Hastings. I don't think the food is worth the wait, nor does it live up to the hype. Famous for its monstrous portions, but personally I'd rather have 1 great meal than 1 mediocre meal that will last me for 2 days.

This place was such a burn

For years I had heard that Anton's was the place for pasta and it was quite popular with people that i knew although I had never been there. I heard that it was well priced and huge portions. I was there on a date and we waited about ten minutes while the staff ignored us at the door until I physically stopped a guy and asked him to seat the two of us being that there we several small tables available. He did and the waitress soon came. We ordered and waited for our food. When it arrived i found my order was wrong and my pasta was stuffed with cheese instead of meat but being easy going as i am i ate it anyway. It was cold in parts and hard and crusty around the edges. I was bummed. When i went to pay the bill the waitress told me that they didn't have debit because of fraud although they did accept visa. I didn't have mine so i had to go down the street to the bank. ha ha. How stupid anyway I give this restaurant a 1 out of 5 stars because of my disheartening experience.

Delicious Take Out!

After reading reviews here I decided to get some for lunch. It was great. Decently portioned with two pieces of bread for only $12.50 (I got seafood-mushroom w/ white sauce).

Excellent pasta, large portions, at a very reasonable price! Will return to dine in.

The woman on the phone was rude, but the man I spoke to later was very nice and polite. I think he was the manager.

Food very good, service not so.

The food was very good...good bang for the buck. However, we had a party of five and waited for over an hour to be seated while several parties of two in which were there much after us were seated before us. We asked for some bread with our meal (which is supposed to come with the meal) and the server told us they had ran out. We then asked if they could substitute with another type of bread and she said no. The manager was summoned over and he was very impersonal and would not compromise. He just said they ran out and he had the 'too bad' attitude. The service from the waitress was okay, but the PR from the manager was awful. Based on the food, we would return, but based on the mangers attitude we would not.

line ups

All I can say about this place is that the portions are large.
Pasta is pasta. Large portions put me off and I don't like leftover pasta. When I was asked if I wanted to take the leftovers home I was greeted with a shocked look. It wasn't good enough to eat a second time or a first time. Our fellow patrons were happy and boisterous which was nice. Waitresses very good. Can't figure out why anyone would line up for the food, tho. If you are on a strict budget and need to have the leftovers for 2 nights then this place is it.

Food was good.. Me and 3 friends were tired after going kayaking. Thought we'd get fattened up after a hard day's work. Anton's was ok overall. Known for large portions at very resonable prices. I liked the service there... our waitress was ok. When i ask her for more bread she must have forgotten but it came like while we were half finished our entree.

Amazing Pasta!

So ... we have eaten here LOTS of times and love it. We are huge fans of the fusili ala tuscana! They have massive portions and GREAT food!

Dont plan on eating all your food ... and start off with the pesto and foccia.

Its a great place to bring family and friends ... especially those visiting. The fresh pasta is really the secret to this place (trust me ... we went once when their pasta chef had cut their hand and they bought store stuff and it was disgusting!).

Great Pasta place for Hungry People!
By xbunnyx of Burnaby (8 Reviews)
Submitted Wednesday, February 4, 2009 - 7:49am [Dine in]

I've been to Antons several times, and I've been lucky I didn't have to wait long for a table. They have a great assortment of pastas and they come in HUGE portions! An average eater will only touch 1/3 of the plate and a Hungry Hippo will only eat 1/2! The taste of their pastas are average and might get boring cuz its such a huge portion.

Their service is also not bad for being so busy! Our waitresses always came by to refill drinks or ask us if we needed anything! But you can see they are working really hard! :D

The only downside of this place is they use WAYYY too much styrofoam containers as EVERY diner requires a doggy bag for their leftover pasta!! :)

Terrible service
By food_lover143 of Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 2:20pm [Dine in]

The place seems pretty pack during weekend, so i decided to check this place out.
The calamari was pretty good, but the pasta was not as great as i thought it would be, but the proportion of it was pretty big. The service was TERRIBLE. discriminate you if you don't seem to be like some old business/ retire people. Just because I don't look old, doesn't mean they could ignore you and not service you. Although the server saw you waiting for tables, and the fact that there are tables, they just ignore you.(this was on a week day / afternoon.. quite quiet.)
After been waiting for 20 + minutes, finally a server that looks unsatisfied serves us to a table.
And right away she ask what we wanted. COME ON. I just sat down. So she left to get us water. After another 20 minute of waiting for this lady or any server to come back, I still get this rude attitude, but compare to different customer, they'll act differently. The food was not that great. The service was poor. Parking is difficult. And oh yeah. you can't even just order one item and enjoy it on a sunny day.. even when there's no customer.

Spaghetti Factory is wayyy better. Go there instead.

My wife and I went here tonight and both of us being Italian we were disgusted. The pasta tasted like Chef Boyardee. Sure the prices and portions are great but the food is crap. My grandma would be turning in her grave if she knew I ate at this restaurant.
The ambiance is casual and clean and the service is very good.
This was the first and only time I have eaten here and I will never forget about 12 years ago visiting a friend who lived across the lane from the restauarant and peeking in the back door to see large cannisters of premade pasta sauce. At least they are pretty consistent........

I love going to this restaurant for the large portions and really great prices. Its very relaxed and I really enjoy watching the chefs at work. There is usually a line up outside but its well worth the wait, and the large portions make great lunches for the next day at work! Out of all the pasta restaurants I have visited, Antons is the one I always want to go to when the thought of pasta comes up. Every friend or family I bring have all enjoyed the food and atmosphere as well.

Where is the customer service?
By regularlocals of New Westminster (1 Review)
Submitted Wednesday, December 31, 2008 - 6:52pm [Dine in]

As a regular patron of Anton's for years (and always happy to bring along friends, family and out of town visitors), I feel sad and sorry to be writing this review, however I think that perhaps my patronage of this restaurant has to come to an end.

After moving further away, my orders with Anton's have become largely "to go" orders, where I can enjoy at home at the end of a long day. The past few times, they have messed up the order, forgotten the bread, increase the oil content of the pastas (or so it seems) and have just been plain rude when on the phone. We have waited for over an hour after being told a pick up time, and this past experience has been the final straw.

Being New Year's Eve, we called well in advance (5PM) expecting to eat around 7:30 or 8:00 PM (an order for 2 people, which I did not feel was unreasonable given the holiday). After a rude server informed us that they would not even look at our order until after 9:30 PM, we asked to speak to the manager. She informed us that we are welcome to come in and sit at the bar, but if we package up the food, it is then "take out" and we must wait until after 9:30. 4.5 hours is completely unrealistic for taking care of customers. We said thanks but no thanks, called up Earls and received a friendly, bubbly, "it will be ready in 15 minutes". What is funny is that Anton's called back shortly after, saying that perhaps they could get the 2 plates of pasta ready by 8:45 instead - too little too late. I understand it is a busy night, but coupled with the recent lack of quality, poor manners of the staff, and apparent disregard for their customers, Anton's will not be where I spend my entertainment and dining dollars from here on in.

worth the wait for my friend, he won the pen...

came here with 10 people. we tried to come early but still ended up waiting. thankfully we all arrived on time cause another group didnt have all the people in their party there so the restaurant wouldnt seat them.

we got crammed into a small space but once a table for two opened up beside us, the waitress combined the tables.

we were served complimentary bread upon request. also asked for olive oil/balsamic - i dont know why but i was surprised for some reason that they didnt charge us for that.

the menu is pretty big but as far as great choices, there didn't seem to be many dishes that stood out. i ordered the emiliana. the waitress said it was her favorite. i also saw a lot of other customers eating it. the dish was DELICIOUS!!!!!!!! the flavors really worked together and there wasnt any heavy sauce which was really nice. even with sharing some of my plate with friends, i still had enough leftovers to last me a couple more meals.

my friend did manage to finish his pasta. he was the only one in our group who conquered his plate. he was pretty excited to get that pen!

Just too inconsistent to give a great review
By Yummy_Vancouver1 of Vancouver (9 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, August 10, 2008 - 2:00pm [Dine in]

Food Rating - Not Great
*worst level of consistency for any restaurant I have ever been to
*always dry or burnt meat topped on pasta
*a few dishes are completely flavorless
*several different choices is nice

Service Rating - Pretty Good
*friendly and polite servers
*long waits at all times with lineups out the door
*Servers are trying to pack up your food while you are still eating
so they can seat the next customers
*no debt - but banks are close by

Value Rating - Average (for the quality) $15 per plate
*again -back to the inconsistency- if it was made perfectly even
75% of the time you went this would be a 4
*minimum of $11 per person so 2 cannot go and share a meal
for value, would be nice if they had half servings
*Quite a few dishes are nothing more than a plate
overflowing with pasta and very little substance
(veggies/meat/cheese)
*bread is not served unless requested - not a big deal

Ambiance - no complaints
*always busy so very upbeat atmosphere
*very small space for the clientele they have accumulated over
the years - the line makes it famous too, not only their portions
so I doubt they will want to move to a bigger space
*because your so close to your neighbour you can't help but gawk
at the huge plate of food sitting across from you while you wait
for yours - it all looks really good!

I must admit, I am guilty of eating at Anton's on several occasions...always trying to order something different because there are so many options. It is a popular take-out choice at my work, and I live right down the street. I have never been to a restaurant more inconsistent. The pasta is ok but be careful for the days it is just plain aweful. I thought I found the baked pasta of my dreams about a month ago, maybe I was just really hungry. I raved about the "Manicotti Anton’s" calling it the best pasta dish I have ever had anywhere. Two weeks later I ordered the same dish, not impressed. The cheese was blackened burnt on top, the ingredients tasted different and the noodles were completely dry, I threw it out. Twice they have put the wrong sauce on my husbands pasta, "Al Porto" - a good pasta when cooked properly. It's not worth sending back to the kitchen because it will take another 20 minutes before you can eat. I think you have to go and experience Anton's but don't expect a gourmet meal.

Garlic heaven...

This place has been awesome forever, with lines 365d/y, regardless of weather or appetite. The pastas are all highly garlicked but with very pleasant, savoury ingredients leading to very safe, family oriented pastafests that have stood the test of time over the last 20 yrs or so. It's a shame you can't book but for simple pasta, this place can't be beat, with consistent service, noisy ambience and those huge 2-3 meal pasta servings. The original and still the best.

Great family place

Our children took us to Anton's for Mother's Day. There were eight of us. I had seen the line-ups for years, but had never gone before. We were told by our son to get there about 4:30--good and early--which we did, but they will not seat your party until they are all there. But once everyone arrived, we got a table for eight on a busy night reasonably quickly.
I had heard the portions were enormous, and they were. I had seafood and mushrooms in a cream sauce, which was redcommnede by the server, and tried everyone else's choice. My cream sauce was extremely tasty--I wish I had the recipe. Service was attentive and pleasant, and the wine was good.
I read the other reviews of this restauarant and was surprised to see one reivew refer to "children" in the kitchen, and another who complained about "the class of the patrons". I thought these were very inappropriate remarks which told me nothing. Another stupid person referred to the cute waitreses.
All in all we had a pleasant evening, and the children were not stuck with a horrendous bill at the end of the meal. We will go again as a family.

a group of us went to antons after work as one of our members was starving but thrifty. one member mentioned the humungous portions and the likelihood of a "pack it home" bag.

we ordered and were not disappointed. the quantity was certainly big but the quality was quite average.

if you want a deal (and another meal the next day) then this is the place to go for pasta. i'd certainly go back, not with a date, but with my hockey team...

Lot of mixed reviews here, and I think one person said it's hit or miss with the wait-time, service, music, etc. so I'll second that. Food is great, if you like comfort Italian food and cheap, good eats.

I don't really know what "authentic" Italian food tastes like and I'll bet a lot of people who complain Anton's isn't authentic don't know either. I've tried a lot of their dishes and liked all of them. I've only gone for lunch and haven't had to wait more than five minutes. Our servers have always been friendly and courteous, no stuck-up ones, and yes, they seem to be mostly on the attractive side, for whatever that counts.

As far as good and inexpensive Italian goes, Anton's is my favorite and the left-overs taste even better the next day.

long lineup, can get quite noisy. servers have too much on their hands so service can be quite poor at times.

i would just call and order takeout
