I do not how the Chinese Restaurant Awards 2012 allowed this restaurant to participate or why Alvin Garden even had the cheek to participate, that is if Chinese Restaurant Awards is worth anything than paper! I went to most of the participating restaurants, Alvin Garden scored ZERO, if there is such a rating here. When one of my guests asked for hot water, she was told to wait! When we complained about how salty and over spiciness of their award winning Alberta beef dish with picked green chili, the waitress said they can add 'sugar' to dish for us!!! There is no ambiance at all, my works' canteen has better ambiance. Two waitresses rushed around like blue arsed flies, and had to be stopped in their path to get the basic services you needed. I do not think they get much tips at all. The food is poor value, that is after your tongue has been singed and your mind had not been numbed to realize that you only had a few ounces of meat covered with abundance of cheap chillies, peppercorns and pickled whatever.
Finally tried out this place last weekend! I love this restaurant and wish it was closer to home instead of a good 30 minute drive away. I highly recommend their spicy chicken dish as an appy, $5.95 a plate, its a starter size plate of chicken doused in a garlicy spicy sauce which looks extremely hot but turns out was just flavourful with a mild kick. We also tried their stir fried bolt with hunan chinese bacon, smoked duck and their egg plant. Each and every dish was a delight! My dining friend said it is by far the best egg plant she's ever had. I did like the duck but found there were too many pieces with bones but for the pieces with loads of meat, they were excellent. I highly highly recommend this restaurant as it is different from regular Cantonese or Taiwanese cuisine which is more rampant in this city. The service was friendly and the servers were patient to help us with recommendations. We also tried their apple and mango milk tea, both were delish without being overly sweet. Looking forward to return with a larger group for sure so that I can order more dishes.
Wanted to test this Authentic Hunan fare. Here is our Observation
Food Quality :
Food is not really Authentic as per most of the comment and earlier reviewers. Sort of a mix between Hunan and Sichuan mix. Good amount of spice. We would rate food as good and needs still few types of twill to become excellent
Food Quantity:
No Questions. Portions are huge as any other Chinese eatery
Service:
Service is OK but 2 disappointing events
> They will get your bill while you are in mid of eating
> They force you to pay tip. Wow Shocking. I was thinking that Tipping is always depending on Satisfaction of the consumer but not a forced event. Hmmmmmm!!!
Found this place by accident, been going there quite often since. We had a very satisfying and enjoyable afternoon. The food was excellent, tasty, and fufilling. This restaurant is consistently good every time we go. The service was quick, attentive and professional. Definite value for the money paid. Under $40 for 4 people.
it was a really pleasant dining experience, with a reasonable prizes, i think this place is a good spot to go.
clean place,and quick service.
the waiters don't speak good english by the way,so it was confusing to order at sometimes.
the smoky bamboo with pork and chicken giblets with white chili were nice and spicy.
i recommend you to get whatever as spicy as possible.
overall good place to eat and good value as well.
We found Alvin Garden a nice neighbourhood chinese restaurant. The food is not pretentious. Just really good, spicy chinese food. The service is decent. Although the restaurant exterior doesn't tell you much, we were surprised how big the restaurant is and it fills up quickly. We would go back anytime.
The place is fairly large, but fills up quickly, so go early or plan to wait. Patrons are mostly Chinese, which is a good sign for authenticity of food. The pickled chilli and beef is a definite favorite, but be warned - there's a reason why chillis are listed before the beef. Hot! The eggplant is a delicious and milder accompaniment, slightly sweet and seared. Almost everything we've tried so far has been really tasty.
Definitely worth a visit, even if it means driving across town to try Hunanese food.
