A quaint one room neighborhood Sushi joint.
I was in Burnaby, hungry for sushi, and wanted to return to Akari. I haven't been here for awhile and was looking forward to some decent sushi.
I had ordered their tea & 3 menu combo for $8.99, I picked Chicken Teriyaki, Salmon & Tuna rolls with rice & Salad. I was very disappoinged in the Chicken Teriyaki, it wasn't cooked properly, raw in the middle of each piece, and didn't eat anymore after my first bite. I definately like the Salmon & Tuna roll, fresh, lots of flavour and thought it was good. I had left overs and brought home the remaining sushi, due to my appetite being lost after trying the chicken.
My server wasn't too friendly, she even got irrated by some children that walked pass her and didn't seem to be having a good day.
With many other sushi places around, I was disappointed with my experience and won't be back.
Sushi rolls are tasteless and sticky without rice vinegar. Is this becoming a fad in sushi restaurants? Is it a matter of costs. Did they just forget to add it? Thank goodness we had other food items to fall back on. Fantastic chicken katsu, large portion crispy on the outside moist and tender on the inside, perfect. Beef teriyaki was a little tough but the accompanying noodles were great. Tempura was par. Chicken teriyaki was fine. Miso soup was sub-par, cloudy and tasteless. Waitress was kind of dour but service was good and efficient.
Since the restaurant is family owned, I give props to the owner. I like how they give rice in an airplane for the children to enjoy. Really cute. Nonetheless, the food is good. Personally, teriyaki chicken can't go wrong. If you live around here, it's worth a try if you are into sushi.
So, for Northern Bby standards Akira Sushi offers pretty solid sushi.
Food: pretty tasty. Their sushi is solid and I really enjoyed their yakisoba noodles. The only item I didn't find all that satisfying was their agedashi tofu..it was pretty tasteless.
Service: standard. We order take-out from here and the wait is usually 15 min. The waiters & waitresses are polite.
Ambiance: it looks clean with a good number of tables if you want to dine-in.
Overall: this is the best take-out sushi we've had in N. Bby so far..which doesn't say very much. I must say that I miss the variety of sushi restaurants that Vancouver offers....I miss Vancouver sushi!!!
Good for a neighbourhood lunch quickie. The 6pcs tuna nigiri sushi was delicious. The #89 combo roll sushi and #92 assorted sushi was well worth the price. But why the "Spicy Add $0.25"? Couldn't they average a bottle of chilli sauce ($2.95) over the day's sales? I was impressed with the food enough to give them a try for dinner. Bill came to $21 for two, tips not included. I shall return.
I have been dropping into Akira for the last 5 year. It is a very niely run family owned restaurants. They serve an excellent Lunch Box Combo. My favorite would have to be the Chicken Terayaki Combo. One of the best Japanese lunch combo kicking around town. All I can say is dropping and give it a try !!! Therefore I rate it as Best Bang for the Bucks!!!
The food here is cheap and good. I had the BBQ eel which was delicious. The service here is great too. Perhaps the best part of this quaint neighborhood joint is the value for money. Considering that this is probably the best sushi I've had in Burnaby, the prices are pretty cheap. Will definitely be back again !
This small cozy restaurant is quite hidden if you're just passing by. It doesn't scream out come on in or anything. I wouldn't have ever noticed it if my boyfriend didn't want to go inside. I am soooooo glad that I did. It was the lunch hour and they had their lunch bento boxes. I had the bento box A which came with chicken teriyaki w/noodles under, tempura, miso soup, rice, green salad & your choice or california, bc, salmon or tuna rolls. All that for $7.95. What a deal, they also had these other combos where you can choose 3 items from a list and also comes with miso soup & rice for 8.95 but that would have been way too much food for me to finish. I could barely finish my bento box. Staff are super friendly and quick. Ambiance is alright but you definitely will be back for the food. A must try!
If you go at lunch or dinner time, which most of us do they have combo Bento boxes that are a better deal than most. It is not part of the regular menu, but good as you pick three or four core items from a large selection and then it comes with the other standard fare. I liked this as most places make you pick from boxes A-D, where here you pick what you like.
I drove past this place and I decided to give them a try. I'm glad I did, because I've ended up going here quite a few times. I usually order their all-day bento box special. I think it's about $7 or $8, and you get your standard bento box items, with noodles also. I also had some deep fried chicken dish that was pretty good as well. The place is pretty cramped though, and the service has been varied. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not so good. I don't mind though, the food more than makes up for it.
Nice place int he neighbourhood to go get some sushi. Place is always busy in the evenings. Service is pretty good most of the time. I always get their rolls combos and my family likes to get their bento boxes. Pretty cheap and good quality. Will definitely be going back
Love Akira Sushi! They make the best Lunch Box Combo's in town and have the most wonderful japanese Green Salad of any restaurant, the dressing is delicious! You feel like part of the family here. The service is great, always filling up your tea. Children's artwork and letters from the community cover the walls, it feels very homey and kid friendly.
You can tell this is a mom and pop shop sushi joint. You can usually find their little boy sitting at the back table playing with his toys (or sometimes taking a nap!)
They have the usual sushi rolls and lunch box specials, but don't really do anything special or any signature rolls.
Their chicken katsu is a good-sized portion, as well as their Box specials (my favorite being the Box B - chicken teriyaki with sashimi, salad, sunimono and rice). A good place to hit when you just want a simple lunch and read your gossip magazine by the window.
Stopped in for lunch, they had a special roll combo for 6.95, came with tuna roll, cali roll and yam roll plus miso soup!
Service was very friendly, she refilled my tea like four times while I was there. The presentation was solid, rolls held together, good rice/sushi ratio (not tons of rice and falling apart)
I was impressed that the yam roll was actually with fresh yam tempura, still hot and crispy.
It was GREAT value, I will def be back. They are also licensed so they serve Japanese beer and wine at very reasonable prices which is a plus for dinner.
They also had seared nigiri on their menu, 5 pieces for 6.50! or 6 assorted pieces for 7.00! Really great prices.
Akira Sushi is a great place to dine out in the Heights. The food is good(love the boxes), the portions are generous and the children's menu can't be beat. The service is fast and friendly. I have eaten here quite a few times and I have never been disappointed. I highly recommend this place for families with children.
A cozy little neighbourhood restaurant in the Heights. We usually go here for their lunch box where you select three items for $8.95. My husband and I usually order the chicken karage, california roll and assorted tempura which also comes with a green salad with miso dressing, miso soup and a bowl of rice. We usually can't eat it all and have to ask for a "doggy bag". The green tea is free and refills are plentiful. There are alot of other items on the menu including a great selection of sushi, all at a reasonable price. They also have a nice menu selection for the kids. Give this place a try, you can't lose.
I have been going to Akira for a number of years now and I have not been dissapointed. I have never got the wrong order served to me and I have never had to send anything back. The prices are great for what you are getting which I would say is quality and quantity and the service is good as well. The atmosphere is alright more of a family joint but I do not mind. All in all, I always leave with a smile on my face
I just wanted to add to previous reviews and agree that Akira is a great place to come for sushi and bento box if you're in this neighbourhood. The ambiance is very cozy and casual- a mom and pop style restaurant. However, after eating, my friends commented that it was possibly the best value ($) for food quality they had experienced for Japanese food.
My husband and I just love, love, love Akira's Bento Boxes! The portion is HUGE, and the price is unbeatable. This isn't a fancy resteraunt, but the tasty food, and sweet family owned business really make up for it! I've never been disapointed with the food, portions, price, or service when coming here! If you don't want to watch your wallet get lighter, and want a nice big portion of sushi and noodles head here!
