Abyssinia boasts a menu of authentic, traditional Ethiopian cuisine.
We were picking friends up in New West/Burnaby for dinner last Friday and they wanted to try something different so I searched for ethnic restaurants in the area and found the Abyssinia. Not many reviews but mostly good and in any event it's tough to go wrong with Ethiopian food so I made a reservation for 6 at 6. Parking is thin on Edmonds but we found a spot on the side street. The restaurant is small with seating for about 25 and it is tucked back from the street with a small patio in front. There was only one other table with a couple Ethiopian guys eating so we likely didn't need to make a reservation although it did secure us a large table at the window.
The sole Ethiopian hostess turned out to also be the cook but she was very friendly and had no problem getting us drinks, making recommendations and helping us select the right amount of food before retreating to the kitchen to prepare it. We ordered 2 vegetarian platters, 2 meat and veggie platters, a lamb Tibis and a signature beef Kitfo, all shared on a large Injera bread platter. We ordered some Tej (honey wine) and a couple Ethiopian beers for drinks to start.
Two of our friends had never had Ethiopian food and they were very impressed with the whole concept of sharing and eating with your fingers and pieces of Injera. Overall the food was excellent, a bit spicier than other Ethiopian restaurants we've eaten at but nothing we couldn't handle. The lamb Tibis was especially good and spicy and we fought over the last bit of the creamed spinach. Total bill for 6 with drinks and tip was $130 so it's good value. We highly recommend the Abyssinia.
First time here. Went after a recommendation. Food was slightly spicy with diced veg and peppers giving it a refreshing taste. A lot of fun to eat shovelling it up with bits of pancake. I'm sure they can arrange a spoon if you ask. Other interesting sounding dishes that I will have to try.
