The Tuscany is a bustling European-style trattoria nestled in a cozy heritage house in Snug Cove, Bowen Island - within walking distance from the ferry. A warm fireplace and a charming garden patio await you!
This place would shame a lot of high dollar restaurants if it was in Vancouver. This chef keeps it simple fresh and honest. The menu changes up depending on what he has available for ingredients, the dishes are not overly complex and the portions are real. We had a seafood hotpot on Israeli couscous as well as balsamic flank steak and cauliflower gruyere gratin and a couple of pizzas and appys (there were four of us) It is a quaint little farm house right in snug cove and the whole ambiance from the walk on 20 minute ferry ride to the country decor is superb. And now the best for last.....they have a real "forno a’ legnio" (wood fired oven) and they know how to use it...this is quite probably the best pizza in the GVRD and at least on par if not better than some pizza I've had in Italy. Throw in a competent wine list that isn't outrageous and wonderful attentive service and you've got a five star experience with out the angry techno chef Downtown attitude! Highly recommended (P.S. make reservations!!)
We've been to the Tuscany numerous times over the past three years and it is always an exceptional experience. It's an ideal spot for a romantic dinner, a family get-together, or taking visiting guests. Drive to the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal, park your vehicle and walk onto the Bowen Island ferry - in 15 minutes you're in Snug Cove - a world away from the big city bustle. Getting there is half the fun!
If it's a warm summer evening reserve a table in their beautiful garden patio. Enjoy a bottle of wine and revel in the atmosphere. The Tuscany specializes in simple country-style cooking with Italian & Mediterranean flavours. For starters, order warm herbed almonds and focaccia with pesto. The Toscana salad with shaved parmesan & sliced pear is delicious, and for a main any of the wood oven pizzas will make your mouth water. On Sundays roast chicken is the specialty - two of us ordered half a roast chicken to share, and with mashed potatoes & veggies it was a total of $14! Don't forget to save room for one of the so satisfying desserts - including the consistently excellent tiramisu.
The Tuscany is a delight. If you're looking to escape the city for an evening, or you want to impress those out-of-town guests with a beautiful BC experience, I highly recommend you make the trek to the Tuscany.
My husband & I recently stayed at a B&B on Bowen & dined at Tuscany for dinner. The ambience is quite groovy as it obviously used to be a private house. We were seated downstairs near the pizza oven. The food is exceptionally good. My husband had penne carbonara & it was delicious. Having had a few bad meals out recently, I appreciated the quality of the food. It's quite kitchy how they write the daily specials on a blackboard as well. The service was very good. All in all, a terrific meal. We'll be back for sure!
Excellent Restaurant on Bowen Island.
Make sure you make a reservation. While the Island is not exceedingly busy, the restaurant can be.
Food comes out fast and hot, and the quality is just excellent. Great wood fire pizza. Simple ingredients, but incredibly tasty.
The a pizza with potatoes and capicola, which was amazing. Next time I think i'll try the all meat pizza.
Also had a mixed pot of fresh scallops and clams. They were very well cooked and done in a chorizo and white wine sauce. Amazing.
Very highly recommended.
Came to bowen island for the day and heard great things about this restaurant so gave it a try. Person taking the reservation over the phone was rude when I was undecided between patio or indoor for a minute. But in person, service was better than expected given the reviews. Server was great with recommendations and thorough with the specials. Also very helpful when helping us take a group photo.
Food overall was good, we had the Tuscany and the very meaty one (can't remember the name) and it came out very fresh and not overly oily. Portobello mushroom canelloni was also very tasty. Dessert was pretty solid, had the white chocolate cherry creme brulee and tiramisu, both very rich and creamy. Left pretty satisfied. Price was reasonable given what you get. Will come back but probably not for a while since there isn't much else to do on the island.
Went back to Bowen and sadly forgot to make a reservation at Blue Eyed Marys. They were full. I remembered reading the reviews here about Tuscany and we decided to try it. Big mistake! All the food tasted of processed garlic and oregano. The service was okay, but the "beautiful garden" is partly a parking lot! Lots of people eating cheap though. I guess that's the appeal. If you can't get into Blue Eyed Mary's grab a hot dog and go home!
My husband and I took the Bowen Island Express from Granville Island to Bowen for a romantic first anniversary outing and supper, with reservations at Tuscany. It was very busy so we were glad to have reservations. We saw a friend there from Vancouver too.
As another reviewer commented, staff are very chatty with their customers who are friends but we did not find this a problem as we had excellent service the whole evening. Water is replaced as it is drunk, menu items were explained despite being on the board behind us and other customers recommended certain desserts. Very friendly place!
We had the Molto Vegetariana pizza and the Firenze pizza. Both were delicious. The firenze was heaven. For dessert we had the panna cotta and the tiramisu. They are not stingy with the mascarpone! We enjoyed the entire experience and our bill, including green tea and 20% tip, was $54.00. We took some of the pizza home too as we could not finish it and still eat dessert...you see where our priorities lie =) This place is worth the visit.
This is one frustrating restaurant! The pizzas and other menu items are interesting and usually good to excellent, the location and ambiance are warm and cozy...but more often than not the reception and service are cold, unfriendly and sometimes downright rude. We've eaten here probably two or three times a year for several years, enough to consider ourselves regulars, and have found the above to be consistently true. This weekend was probably the final straw for us; our dinner was the low point of a pleasant visit to Snug Cove.
We had good food but the server and other host staff were way too preoccupied with one or two tables of friends/business associates to bother with my wife and I. Our questions about the menu were answered with a wordless flick of the hand at the menu itself. Menus were whisked out from under our noses as we ordered, and we were barely given time to add things like a salad or a glass of wine. Food was plunked without ceremony in front of us. No one asked if we enjoyed our meal and I don't recall hearing the words "thank you" once all night, including as we exited. I also can't recall anything we did to provoke this sort of rudeness.
The Tuscany does seem to have a loyal following and is almost always busy when we visit. Perhaps that's why they don't feel the need to make customers feel welcome, or feel that their business is appreciated. Whatever the reason, I'll stick to ordering take out in the future so I only have to put up with brusque help when I collect my pizza box at the door.
