Sumas Sushi Cafe is a small Japanese restaurant located on the Abbotsford Village Shopping Centre premises serving fine Japanese cuisine prepared using only the freshest ingredients.
We made an evening pit stop here on the way to a short weekend R&R in Harrison. It's nicely appointed and clean for a strip mall restaurant and the menu choices looked decent.
I went with the dinner bento box to go. It came with all the usual compliments in a bento offering, but it was especially nice to see them use wild salmon for their nigiri. Outside of that however, the rest were mostly misses. It came with a sunomono salad, a combination of rice noodles topped with prawns in a strong, sweet-tangy vinegar sauce which seemed too over the top in taste. It's meant to be eaten first to enhance your appetite, but none was to be had. The teriyaki consisted of 5 thin pieces of chicken with a chinese soup spoonful of rice bedded above a blanket of undercooked cabbage and bean sprouts that covered half of my large styrofoam container. At $19 tax included, it was an expensive experience. The rest of the menu looked much more reasonable however.
Whatever minimal service I received was adequate, so dine in patrons should be satisfied with what they're getting.
If this is the only Japanese restaurant in the area, I would probably come back and avoid what I ordered before to be safe.
I have been to this place quite a few times on my way through Abbotsford. It's not the best sushi around but not the worst. The service is fairly fast if not robotic. The sushi is average if not a bit fishy. I went the other day and had lunch. I paid on my Visa and she pretended that she was having some type of trouble with the machine. I had two small cheap rolls and a soup. It still came to $14 with tax - I didn't check at the time but that seems high. I left a cash tip so I did not add a tip to the machine. When I check the charge that went though on my credit card it was put through at over $17 so they somehow helped themselves to a tip. Pretty low. Watch your bill - I won't have to as I'll never go back.
Being a lover of sea food and inhabitant of Abbotsford, I have been to a good number of the Japanese Restaurants in town. My favourite by far is Sumas Sushi Cafe.
Walking into a clean and orderly cafe, you are immediately welcomed by the chef(s) and other employees. I can choose whether to dine in, or take out. The food is made in front of me, if I choose to sit at the bar, and for take out, it's never a long wait.
The sushi is not state of the art, but it is the best in town. And let's face it, this is not Vancouver - it's Abbotsford. The price is not bad, I pay $10.00 to satisfy my craving, and I am always satisfied.
I have a family of six and we order two trays and are completely stuffed by the end.
I am a loyal customer of the cafe, and will always point you in it's direction if you're looking for good sushi, in Abbotsford.
