Homemade Napoleons and perogies…
By floodedsky of Vancouver (14 Reviews)

Wow! The custard was so light and fluffy. The was pastry flaky and crunchy. Delicious! Also delicious were the homemade cheese and potato perogies served in-store with fried onions, bacon, and sour cream. I will never buy the frozen grocery store perogies again after eating their homemade perogies. I purchased some to go, and the owner gave me instructions on how to prepare them properly.

My friend and I ate there last night. Although there was only one other occupied table in the entire restaurant, the hostess seated my friend and I were seated at a table in the back, against the back side wall. While we were eating our appetizer, two noisy men were seated at a table directly behind and to our side - only one arm's length away. Now there were only three fully occupied tables in the entire restaurant. The waiter was arrogant, haughty, and in our faces throughout our meal. My friend finished his dinner early and his plate was taken away, but not silently. We were interrupted many times with unnecessary comments, such as "I'll just take this away" and "Are you finished yet?" This is pretty much taboo in a good restaurant. Waiters should go about their tasks unnoticed and be 100% courteous and sensitive towards their customers. When my friend tried to pay his bill, there was a problem with the debit machine. He tried three times and the paper pumped out, "Transaction Not Completed." After the third try, the waiter announced to the entire restaurant, "DECLINED." I was so angry that I could barely contain the food I had just eaten there. The waiter is a sadist with a very very bad attitude. It wouldn't surprise me if he personally planned our entire evening to be miserable. In recent outings, I have not felt more like a second-class citizen than at La Cucina. The food was okay. Our meals came to combined total of $81. I will never go back and I do not recommend this restaurant unless you have very "thick skin."

The dry over-cooked deep fried chicken nightmare
By TIREGUY205 of Langley B C (1 Review)

You think by this day and age, that a company that boasts about its burgers, would have some sort of clue making them.
I work two jobs, so its hard to find time to dine out. So tonight my 16 year old son decided to buy dinner for our family. I was at work (what else is new) but I'm only 6 minutes from our local Red Robin.
Well I might as well been on the Moon. My son dropped off dinner at the shop for me. Opening it right away, I noticed two things right away. One, how hot everything wasn't and how hard as rock and dry the chicken in the sandwich was. I have to also add that the oil that they used to demolish this chicken filet had turned and tasted a little rancid. The best part was the very large weggie fries that were not properly cooked and all the small broken glass fragment like tiny fries (like the end of a bag) stuffed all over inside the box and burger, as like it was some kind of mob hit tossed in the box.
Now the shop I work for used to order from them, now I know why they don't anymore. I told my wife that if I ever get the urge to have something from Red Robin, to kick me in the head. I will gladly embrace our local hospital food over this......manufactured disappointment.

Walked in for their lunch buffet on a weekend. For it being 2 pm on a Saturday, there was a wait. I can take that as a good sign since it is a popular place (also, being West End and Davie, what more can you expect?) We didn’t wait too long for table for two which was nice.

I’m not new to Indian food but this is my first time at their lunch buffet. We ended up trying almost about everything. For it being $11.95 per person, it was pretty decent.

I did like a bunch of things but found the butter chicken to be a little under-spiced, something super common in Indian restaurants here to appease the Canadian tastes. Good thing is, chicken to sauce ratio was good. Even the rice (plain) alone was good enough to eat on its own. Water was always present, although I could handle the spices a lot of others seemed to really need it. I would give its buffet 8.5/10

Real Deal Mexican!!

Submitted Monday, February 1, 2016 - 5:45am [Dine in]

Hello there,

Well, its my turn again to head out to New West for some culinary eats. My buddy decided on this place as he and his wife have been here several times before. I have to admit I was skeptical as my usually stomping ground for tacos was on cambie and broadway. New West and Mexican food???Huh?? Anyways, we decided on lunch wednesday . Parking is basically everywhere...paid parking on 6th Street or on the side streets. I was lucky to find a 1 hour free spot on a side street.

The restaurant looked pretty small as I was walking in to find out they actually did renos and expanded to the store next door. My buddy and his wife were already seated and waited for me.... ambiance...look good....solid wooden chairs and tables with splashes of bright colors on the walls. Checking out the menu I decided on the Ceviche ($7) and 4 different tacos: 2 Al pastors, 1 Camaron and 1 Pescado ($2.50 each) plus a pop ($2). My buddy and his wife got the Pozole Rojo soup ($10) , Carne Asada ($13) and chicken Flautas($11) house platters with two glasses of ice water. The waitress was friendly but her English was okay but the good thing was my buddy's wife spoke fluent Spanish!! Thank Goodness!!

In no time...we were served a complimentary bowl of pastel colored tortilla chips with squeeze bottled red and green salsa. The chips were standard but the salsas were the stand outs...flavorful with or without a bit of heat.In about 10 minutes, I got my ceviche with chips and they got the big bowl of Pozole. The Ceviche was quite tasty!!! The combination of diced basa fish in lime juice (the acid cooks the fish) with a mixture of cilantro, onions, tomatoes and avocado was a treat in my mouth. The best??? No but a good second. The best I ever had was at my old work place where another buddy of mine made it in house...used top notch ingredients: diced halibut, scallops and cooked shrimp.. same mixture but cucumbers instead of avocados.

The main attractions arrived just a bit later. The tacos....seems strange..... only one soft tortilla usually there are two. Anyways rather than bitch about it...eat man!! The al pastors (marinated pork, diced onions, cilantro and pineapple tibbits) were very good...good meaty favor with a touch of sweetness. Usually my GOTO taco. The camaron taco ( garlicky shrimp, celery, onions, cilantro, and melted cheese) was a combination of sweetness, crunch and creamness in my mouth....that was also very good . But the piece de resistance was the pescado taco ( garlicky fish fillet, celery, onions, cilantro and melted cheese)..this thing just melted in my mouth...this one was excellent.

All in all a very good meal. I asked them about their selections....they said very good as well. My buddy was stuffed....he barely finished his carne asada platter (grilled sirloin steak with side of rice pilaf, refried beans pico de gallo and 3 corn tortillas). His wife gave me a piece of the chicken flautas( 4 corn tortillas rolled with shredded chicken,then deep fried. Topped with cheese, tomato, onion, cilantro ,guacamole and sour cream with an addition of salsa roja)...its very good...chicken was tender, tortilla was crisp and saucy..the blend of topping just took it over the top. So for some real authentic Mexican food...stop here..of all the places..New West..GO FIGURE?? Thanks for reading!!

The title says it all here. Free parking is the only good thing going on for this restaurant. Food was bad, service was mediocre at best and yet they charge like a mid range restaurant.

Their menu looks good. Lobster tail, bisque, prawns, risotto, rack of lamb, and on and on but their don't know how to cook them properly. Overcooked, sauces that are clearly store bought, over seasoned and not to mention warm beer.

There are so many restaurants on Denman so just keep walking and keep looking.

Ignorant owner and so-so food

Submitted Sunday, January 31, 2016 - 6:51am [Dine in]

My wife and I went there the first time last night. When we arrived at 6:30pm for our reservation only 3 tables were occupied. We were standing there waiting to be seated and for 5 minutes we were not greeted nor shown to our table. At the time I noticed that there was this man standing next to the bar not doing anything after glancing at us. Finally a waiter, who had been busy with other customers took us to our table.

I noticed later on that the first man, who looked a little like Danny Devito, was telling other waiters what to do so I assumed he was either the owner or the manager. So why did he ignore us in the first place?

I had Spaghettini Al Granchio, which was a little dry. My wife ordered the Fettucine Marco Polo. which she took one bite and left the whole dish untouched because it was too sour, too spicy and too dry. However, our waiter was very nice so we left him the usual 20% because it wasn't his fault.

I'll never go back there and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody.

The Only Male Server in the Restaurant was assigned to or table.
He was curtius and made great Gestured that he would tale care of us ROYALLY.
~
After he took our orders (Fish n Chips X4 ) he disapeared for a VERY LONG TIME.
He told us the slow service was the fault of the Kitchen.
~!
I asked for more (endless fries) Fries as soon as possible.
~
I finished my dinner before the (over cooked) fries arrived......He again advised it was the Kitchens Fault.
~
I was quite embarased at the whole thing.......................... We invited new residents to the area......and this "FLAG SHIP" of THE PANTRY group let us down FULLY.
~~~
I better restate this... ONE TERRIBLE WAITER/SERVER loused up our evening to the point I really don't think I will be returning to The Pantry.
All the reviews here are old, so I'll give it to them for it because I also used to be a regular. The falafel used to be so good but this time around it was almost inedible. The meat does not taste food and the chicken (or lack thereof) did not make me happy.
My major problem though, is the cleanliness. The table we sat in was completely wet but in a mucky style and we had to hound down a worker to get it cleaned. The same goes with the floor. Completely took my appetite away.
I hope they address this issue asap so that I can erase these bad memories.
Surprised Radicle has not had any reviews until now. This place has literally been my favorite stop for lunch ever since it opened. It is only a few blocks away from where I used to work but I still make the trip down nonetheless. The juices are a bit on the pricier side, but you can feel that it is made completely from natural materials. Not to mention that if you buy their tumbler for $3.00 and keep on bringing it back, you can get 50c off your next purchase. The General is one of my most recent favourites, and the acai bowls are to die for.
Took a bit of a break from work and came to Swad for a relaxing lunch with a girlfriend. I’ve been meaning to try this place out ever since it opened and so today we took the plunge (or rather yesterday, to be precise).
First impression: the décor was really nice, modern and fancy, even the bathrooms. A breath of fresh air from all the tiny corner delis turned into restaurants for Indian food. The service was not bad, can’t remember our waiters name but we had to wait for a seat when we first came in. He took our order and disappeared for a while, but once the appetizers started rolling things picked up their pace.
For appetizers we had the vegetable pakora. Surprised not to see samosa listen in the menu. We didn’t care too much for the pakora but the rest of the food was good. The entrees came almost instantly, Bengali curry and Labadar (hope I’m getting the name right) which was a chicken dish. The Bengali curry was SO GOOD. It came with a coconut cream which was splendid. The Labadar was a surprise, very rich in spices and tasted even better when mixed with the basmati. Overall, an excellent choice for lunch.
We went to Hon's at the opening of their business day at 11:00. There was one other person there.
We ordered the beef slices with chow mein. Other diners starting coming in and ordered. We sat there and
and waited for our food. People ate and left. Finally, at about 11:35, we got our order.
Food was absolutely terrible and not edible. I am not a picky eater but the noodles tasted like it was
plastic & the meat was very chewy & tough.
Needless to say, we will never set in this location again. It used to be ok.
Went for dine out Vancouver. Food was good but the portions were very small. The restaurant side did not have a window seat but the bar side had one so we decide to sit there. View is excellent and food quality is not bad. Had the salmon which was frozen but still tasted good. The dessert was very average. Not impressed with the dessert. There was a guy singing which was not bad. I would only go for the view but not the food. There are better restaurant that one can try.
Submitted Monday, January 25, 2016 - 12:07am [Delivery]
Delivery service is very poor. Ordered at 6:30 on a Sunday evening, called at 7:30 to see if order left yet, we wanted to add something to order. We were told the order had left 5 minutes ago. Called back 30 minutes later to see where it was. We were told 10 more minutes. Asked to speak to a manager was told he didn't have time to chat after waiting on the phone for ten minutes. Hostess in a rude and sarcastic voice said they'd give us 25 % off when it arrived. 8:25pm order finally arrived. Food was stone cold, sent it back. This was the third time ordering using delivery, every time either the food is cold or food missing. Remembering you pay $4.00 for the service. Never again. Customer service poor, management is seriously lacking in customer retention. New restaurant facility but it's your delivery service that needs an overhaul.
Everytime we go in the music is way to loud. They definitely need to lower it. It would be nice to here and talk to the person your with normally instead of yelling at them. Also the food is ALWAYS cold no matter what we order. Good food but it would be nice to eat hot. Boneless chicken, potatoes skins, etc.staff are a bit slow at times, gets frustrating when you see its not busy. Manager super nice though. Wish he could improve on these things especially having hot food :)
Had delivery from them once in my last visit and found their food to be decent in terms of sauce and taste. Not too over the top, but not flavourless and/or watered down either.
This time around, we checked out their locale for lunch. There was a buffet going on and we decided to give it a try. The restaurant looked clean and the number of people inside already ahead of us gave us confidence that the buffet would be good. Would have liked to have been the first ones in to get the food when it was freshly made.
Overall, the buffet was decent – flavours and sauces were really well balanced. I did find some taste lacking in the vegan/vegetarian dishes, but I my eyes were all in the chicken. Chicken tikka masala was wonderful and not overcooked to the point of being dry, which was a plus. Prices were fine for Vancouver standards.
I would give this place a 4/5
We did the Dine Out menu at Chewies last week. It was not at all what I expected, for the location I thought it might be a bit stuffy, but it was absolutely not. The atmosphere is relaxed and very comfortable. The staff was super friendly (even though we went in the wrong door) and really knowledgeable about the food and wine. This is my best Dine Out experience so far this year, can't wait to come back.
We both started with the pork crackling which was so good, might as well call it pork crack, it was perfect. My friend had the Chicken and waffles and I went with the gumbo, both were so good. He raved about the honey butter drizzled over the fried chicken. My gumbo was so smooth and rich and smoky, it was delicious. Desserts were the potted red velvet cake and cheesecake with mulled wine poached pears, so good, not too sweet, all delicious.
There is a nice wine list, something for every palate, and very reasonably priced. We'll be back for sure, one of my new favourites.
If you are in the mood for upscale Indian food, this is the place to come. From the moment you step in, you can tell this is not your typical Indian restaurant. No lunch buffets or specials, but rather, fine tapestry and lighting adorning the walls...ie. fine dining. With Tasty Indian Bistro around my place, I have been trained to eat my good butter chicken and naan.
There were quite a few tables empty, so we scored a seat in no time. A server came after about five minutes to give us our menus, and asked us if we had been here before. I quickly learnt why we said that, as the food was not your typical Punjabi items on the menu. Quite confusing, if you have never been to a curry house.
Calamari ($11) - decently sized and accompanied by a delicious mango chutney.
Kashmiri Rogan Josh ($17) - healthy serving, very good taste of spices, chillies a little too much though. Leftovers tasted just as good the next day.
Butter chicken ($14) - I had to try it here just to compare. Gravy was a little different from what I am used to but still good.
Keema naan ($5) - recommended by the server, stuffed with pieces of minced lamb and accompanied with a sauce. Good option, but a little bit of an overkill for me after the lamb dish.
Service was friendly for us and ambience is good. Had a pleasant dinner and when I got home an hour later I had vicious cramps and ended up throwing up and having the runs for 2days. My friend also had the runs.
I informed the restaurant manager and he said he will look into the food quality with the kitchen. He offered a full total Amount spent as a gift coupon to the restaurant.
I don't think we will be returning to this restaurant.
Lemme just start off by saying I never really got the appeal of Chicago pizza. Seems a little...meh. It always felt like something on people in the US, or not even that, Chicago would like. So anyways, lead to another and I ended up ordering from here. 1 medium Hawaiian it was for the nite. Delivery took a little longer than expected, called to confirm my address later on. Pizza was okay and I forgot to tell them no deep dish so it came anyway. The taste was okay but I couldn't finish it because it was so big. Eating it by hand was a hassle as everything was spilling so I had to use an excessive number of napkins to pick it up.
